I made the mistake of picking this Italian restaurant for my nonna’s 62nd birthday, as her beloved authentic Trattoria Leonardo regrettably closed… and I really didn’t feel like cooking.
I’m hard-pressed to understand the overall 4.4 stars rating. Stranieri?
In all fairness, I should have read the reviews… all of them. All the lowest ones are absolutely correct… a bit harsh on service… though they did seem completely disorganized and unprepared for guests with reservations, even with so much staff hanging about. I was fooled by the promising online menu and the price point indicating elevated dining.
Overall: TERRIBLY UNDERWHELMING
… let alone ridiculously overpriced for the « quality » let alone quantity.
Table service was minimal (table itself wasn’t fully prepped nor corrected). Took almost 15 minutes to get menus after we were seated (13 mins to be offered the pretentious QR version - another 2-3 to find battered printed ones)… longer for offers of drinks. Our friendly assigned waitress was occupied with a party of 10… but any of the milling-about staff should have stepped up, if only with menus and water. It was 5:30 and we were the second seated party alongside said party of 10. The musical ambiance is fine if you appreciate elevator-worthy cover versions of 90s power balades (which I actually do ;).
The actual sampled food:
The calamari is basically lightly floured - no additional spices or herbs - and served with shrimp cocktail sauce?! In an alleged Italian restaurant?
We were offered a small plate of 4 simple but good bread pieces with butter in plastic pods (?!).
The Caesar salad is an accurate copy of that bought in a bag with Renée’s dressing.
The $3 portion of gnocchi for $23 is NOT fresh. Commercial. Not fluffy but chewy. IF (and that’s a big if) it was house-made, it was long ago made and frozen… and served with too much tomato sauce. Worse than the kind I made the first time with my nonna at 7.
The swordfish « catch of the day » was $38 for a fair ~6oz piece of fish with literally 4 pieces of broccoli, 4 pieces of red pepper, 3 sliced rounds of carrot (all steamed and lightly buttered with garlic), and a small splatter of thinned out mash potato. Granted the fish was lovely; cooked perfectly and delicately flavoured. The rest was forgettable.
I assure you, in my line of work and leisure, I have no issue paying high prices for good authentic food. Money wasn’t an issue. The prices were only a slap in the face.
Authentic Italian food is meant to be simple and fresh… and loaded with flavour and love.
