After a fun visit to Whytecliff Park, we headed to nearby Horseshoe Bay to grab some lunch and wound up at Troll’s. It’s hard to miss this popular eatery as it’s located right on the corner of Bay Street and Royal Avenue. We were actually thinking of grabbing a light lunch so we ordered the Troll’s Chowder ($12 for the entrée size) and the Cod and Chips ($17 for 2 pieces + additional $6 for 2 pieces of fried oysters). Much to our surprise, when the food arrived at our table, we were taken aback by how large the soup and fish pieces were. The picture really doesn’t do it justice as it’s difficult to comprehend how huge the bowl of soup was. Not only was the bowl of chowder huge, it was chunky and chock full of things like baby clams and double-smoked bacon. You can get this as either white or red chowder and we picked Manhattan which turned out very creamy and not overly tomatoey. The batter on the cod and oysters was light and crisp which kept kept everything inside nice and juicy. They say that their fish and chips is “famous” and I won’t disagree with them. Underneath the generous portions of seafood, you’ve got a bed of addictive fries with a light crispness on the outside. Is this place a bit of a tourist trap? Yes – but there’s a reason why they’ve been so successful for so many years… the food is good and the portion sizes will keep your belly full.

This place has been a beloved classic for fish and chips since my childhood, and I'm delighted to report that they've retained their authentic touch. The New England clam chowder is a showstopper, boasting rich and irresistible flavors with the perfect balance of creaminess and heartiness. When it comes to their fish, it's consistently fresh, crispy, and generously portioned. Paired with their classic big potato chips and the most delightful coleslaw, it's a true fish and chips experience. Their tartar sauce is spot on, enhancing the flavors perfectly. During our visit, we also ventured to try their sweet potato fries, and they were expertly cooked—no sogginess or over-frying to be found. The quality of their food is matched by great service; even during busy times, we received our meal in a reasonable amount of time. The atmosphere of the place exudes a classic pub-restaurant charm, complemented by the surrounding fishing environment. It's a nice touch to see some First Nation items on display, adding a unique cultural dimension to the experience. Plus, the location is perfect for a post-dinner stroll along the water. I wholeheartedly recommend this spot for those seeking a taste of classic fish and chips, excellent service, and a memorable dining setting.

Trolls Restaurant – Horseshoe Bay While waiting for the ferry at Horseshoe Bay, we decided to stop in at Trolls. The place was busy, but we were seated fairly quickly, and from that moment on, the service absolutely stood out. In fact, for the very first time ever, I’m giving out my personal 🏆🏆Golden Server Award🏆🏆 and it goes to our server at Trolls. I wish I had caught his name, because he was simply outstanding. We asked about the rotating beer tap, the option wasn’t really our style. But without us even asking, he brought over a small sample so we could try it, turns out, it was actually pretty good. That little extra effort really impressed us. The food was great as well. I had a bacon cheeseburger that was delicious, while my wife enjoyed a hearty split pea soup with a generous serving size. As she was finishing up her soup and I had polished off my burger, our server came by again and offered to grab me some extra fries—just one more example of him going above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of. The service was friendly, thoughtful, and honestly some of the best we’ve experienced. Thanks to our incredible server, Trolls gets a glowing review from us. We’ll definitely be back!

I just wanted to take a moment to recognize how awesome this place is. Not only are they a popular, high paced and a very busy restaurant at times but they have running it down to a fine art.

My boyfriend and I were in there on Friday night near close. We had the amazing Matt serving us. Both of us were so impressed by how effortlessly and smoothly Matt served us. We were served within a minute of sitting down. He always checked in to see if everything was ok. He was on top of filling our drinks. Every side sauce or change was made. He didn't miss anything. I frequent this establishment with others and every single time we get Matt it's a refreshing change from what kind of service that you tend to receive at other restaurants these days. Matt is a superstar!

I spoke to Ben, the friendly and out right fun manager on at the time and wow, just more awesomeness. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our conversation with Ben. You can tell that he is very passionate about his job.

Even though you guys were closing we had no idea. No one rushed us, our service was 100% and the food was amazing.

I love that Trolls has a family feel, from the atmosphere to the rapport that they build with their customers. You can tell that the staff are like one big family. Always familiar faces. I think that says a lot about the management. It's so nice to see.

You guys have many great staff, it just happens that we get Matt quite often.

Awesome job everyone! Can't wait for...
