Okay, so I know right now I'm giving Bengali Sweets and Restaurant a 1. Hopefully that can be updated but I'll explain all aspects.
So I've recently discovered that this restaurant is now operated by new owners. I'm happy that the spot has remained, but it has changed in many ways.
They now offer meat (formerly, Bengali Sweets was 100% vegetarian), so that's a bonus. They more importantly offer halal options, one of the reasons we've ordered from them 3 times in the last 2 weeks.
So points to this restaurant for offering some halal items, that is where they get the 1 star from me.
Location: Good. The are located in the Newdale strip mall, which the parking lot can be congested. You will likely get a parking spot.
Staff: Nice, friendly.
Food: Now here is where the problems start and continue to go wrong, and folks, considering this is restaurant that serves food, they've got some major fixing up to do here.
Chaat Paapri: We did not receive it as advertised (no chickpeas were included in our order). We brought this to the attention of the store who did not seem phased by the error.
Aloo Tikki: advertises tamarind sauce. There was no tamarind sauce. In fact, the aloo tikki was just heavily coated in chickpeas that were cooked with too much turmeric. It looked like a yellow mess of mush.
Samosa Plate: Now, I've had my fair share of samosa plates and this was not a samosa plate. It was identical to their Aloo Tikki, but with some broken up Samosa.
Paneer Pakora: Tasteless Vegetable Pakora: So delicious!
Lamb Biryani: This place definitely doesn't know how to cook biryani. The rice was over cooked and broken, on the mushy side, had green peppers, and some lamb pieces throughout. For a biryani lover, do not get their biryani, you'll be very disappointed. Very heavy on the turmeric as well.
Chicken Curry: It advertises a home style curry with onion based thin curry. What we received the first time resembled butter chicken. What we received the second time appeared to be tandoori chicken, cut up into small pieces, coated with a heavy tomato cream sauce--like butter chicken!
Ras Malai: Now I love ras malai, and I know my ras malai. What we received was not ras malai but Bengali rasgulla...it was flattened in the shape of ras malai but very hard, and very sweet, and didn't contain a milk base but murky sugar syrup. It gave the same squeaky effect that one expects with rasgulla. So very dissappointed.
Jalebi: Claimed to be fresh, but all we could taste was an unpleasant oily taste.
At the end of the day, all I'd want to say to this restaurant is that if you don't have something, just tell us you don't have an item. Don't try to pass off some other food as something it is not. I'm sure you can cook well, if you gave a genuine effort, but the last 3 and only times we've experienced your food (since new ownership), there's always been disappointment.
I'm unsure if I'll be returning here or not, to try other menu items, because so far, all the items we've tried, with exception to the veggie pakora have been either just satisfactory in taste, missing ingredients or the wrong item. Even after speaking with staff, the situation did not seem to remedy itself.
I hope to one day be able to give this restaurant a better star rating, that they...
Read moreI had the worst restaurant experience at this place. Before I tell you in more detail, just want to let you all know most of the customers had this experience before and it will keep happening with the future customers. So please go at this place at your own risk. Anything can happen here. I ordered 6 Samosa plate on phone. And been informed the total will be $45 and will be appreciated if I can pay by cash and the food will be ready by 3:30 pm. At 3:30, I received a phone call that my order is ready to pickup. When I went to pickup, the food was not ready and I had to wait for 20 minutes, even I had received the phone call for pickup. Then The staff girl informed me if i pay by cash there will be no tax and they charge me 45$, even though the total should be $6.49 per plate. I asked for the detailed price and reason for overcharge and been informed by her that samosa is 0.90 cent each but then how come they can charge 45$ for 12 samosas. Also If we order 1 lb sweets, they will be filling the whole box and then forced to pay for extra sweets even though we only asked for 1 lb. Then the owner came outside and started yelling for asking the reason of overcharge and also he tried to hit me, which is completely unprofessional and rude behaviour. It was my mistake, I didn’t read their reviews earlier then placing order with them. The sweets(gulab jamuns) bought from there were not fresh. It’s taste was not good too, that can easily describe its not fresh. But I already had enough argument with the owner, so didnot want to go back to make the complaint of food quality. If we are paying for something, we have rights to know what the actual item cost is and how much we have been charged and also we expect to get fresh food items. The owner seems like mentally sick. Please do not go to this place ever or ready to pay extra than the...
Read moreSummary: stop trying to swindle your customers - they're not stupid.
Went there today for the first time in a few years and I couldn't have been more disappointed. I guess the management must have changed since I was last there.
When I walked in, the lights were off. The person who I assume is the owner walked out, with un unimpressed face, asked what I want. I asked for an assortment of sweets for 2 people.
He proceeded to pack a large box full of (mostly) the cheaper items, until there were over 3 lb, then wanted to charge me at the most expensive item price by weight. To add insult to injury, another customer walked in who I assume knew the owner, and they stopped serving us to take their order, finishing off one of the items I wanted to try. I asked if he could leave one for me, and he said no, and when he saw the look in my face, said it'll just take 5 mins to make more. He then made us wait 45 (!!) mins!
After such a long wait I asked him to reduce the 3 lbs to 2, as it's way too much for just 2 of us, and he reluctantly started removing all the nicer more expensive items from the box, first down to 2.6, (asked if that was ok) then 2.25 (asked again). I was firm on 2, and when all was said and done, I was left with over 50% by volume of the 2 cheapest types of sweets. At that point I just wanted to leave, and didn't feel like arguing further.
Worse yet, the sweets themselves don't hold a candle to how good they used to be.
I will not be returning. Guess I'll give Holy Spice off of Kenaston a try next time. What a shame.
Note: picture is after eating a disappointing yellow ball.
Of 10+ deserts on display our "assortment" included 6 kinds.
Edit: I tried the rest of the sweets. They were better than the abundant yellow balls, but still nowhere near as good as...
