An old fashioned diner in the heart of North Kildonan. Right off the main artery (Henderson), this place is easy to find and has decent street parking available within the block.
Seating isn't exactly comfortable but it's what you expect with an older pizza joint. It seemed clean inside, but you don't get the 'sparkling clean' feel from the ambiance - more like it just meets the health authority requirements.
I found the menu pretty simple to read with a decent amount of options. While a bit pricey compared to what you expect (based on how the place looks) the pizza came out quite nice. Thin, crispy crust topped with generous amounts of meat and cheese. Tried a few varieties and liked them all.
Some stars lost for service (it felt like your mother in law who clearly doesn't like you but puts up with you was the waitress), as everyone in the group had issues with the attentiveness (had to make several attempts to flag her down despite her walking right past us several times) and help provided (advice on menu options, etc).
While the pizza was quite good, the lasagna and spaghetti were both extremely lacking. No one who had the spaghetti actually finished them - or wanted to. The noodles were thick and squishy, while the sauce was straight out of a dollar store bargain brand can - far from restaurant quality. I found it telling that the waitress didn't care one bit when three near-full spaghettis (in a large group) were left on the table at the end. No question about why they weren't finished, no offer to remake, exchange for something different, or take them off the bill. It was as if it was expected that people would just try them and decide to skip dinner.
I can see myself going back, but I'd likely stick with takeout pizza only. The service was hardly worth...
Read moreOrdered the premium mexican, whatever it's called. So bland, tasteless, cold, toppings didn't seem fresh, took an hour and a half. It seems like they made the pizza when I called and finally got around to delivering it over an hour later. Paid $40 including tip for this garbage. What happened to Gondola? It used to be so good.
Edit: I received a gift card in the mail covering the full cost of my pizza plus tip. Gave it another go and ordered 2 pizzas. This time I picked them up myself because 1., I didn't want to wait around forever and 2., The gift card was literally a sheet of paper and only valid at the location from where I first ordered. Again, the pizzas were a disappointment. Not that hot, so dry, so bland. I added a couple stars for prompt action and good customer service, but the pizza is...
Read moreReal talk: I only go to Gondola for one kind of pizza- BBQ CHKN -and just had to visit last night. I called ahead so my pizza would be ready by the time I got there. Person on the phone was quick and so very pleasant. I’d never been to this particular location before and the pizza blew my mind. It was like a whole different pizza- packed with toppings galore that I would make the drive to this particular location any day over the others just because of how nice she made it. Thanks Gondola but in particular thank you to the person who took my call, customer service during pick up and for making the best pizza I’ve had in a...
