Disclaimer: I haven't eaten at Small Potato at this stage, but I'll pass on my view of the coffee for what it's worth.
Background: Chai Wan has no Pacific Coffee and only yet one Starbucks outlet at the New Jade Shopping Arcade. This presents a huge opportunity for the district in terms of promoting a cafe culture (for those with their head in the game) as there is little to compete against so far and already a very reasonable demand.
I like to support independent businesses over corporate chains, so I was interested to compare the coffee in terms of taste, quality and value with the market leader in the neighbourhood. I ordered a cafe latte with an added flavouring.
Findings: The good news --or bad, depending on your perspective-- is that the taste is about the same. This means that there is little to distinguish it from others. At the same time though, they have generally got it right. The quality is also reasonable, even if it did come with slightly too much foam for a latte.
As far as pricing goes, the value is not great. And here is one of the main issues to improve upon. There is only one size to start with, which is a problem. It's a small cup and (@8oz) will not suit those looking for a more lasting coffee-drinking experience ...such as those looking for an after-lunch energy boost before end-of-day meetings, lessons, rehearsals or indeed, to power through the movie you're about to watch at Movieland. I paid $28 for mine. For Starbucks' large size (the 'Grande'), it costs around $40 and you get double the amount of coffee, which unfortunately puts Small Potato's coffee on the expensive side.
Small Potato has a lot to like as a venue. It is spacious and attractively furnished. It has a great logo of its own -- a stylised potato person holding a mug of steaming coffee (where's my mug?) -- and it is centrally located in Chai Wan. There is a great deal of potential in the location. One might even imagine a future al fresco option on the street in milder weather, as it has a unique outlook to parks and gardens. But I digress.
There is room for improvement and a few key issues need to be addressed: Staff were unclear about what I ordered after I asked for an option directly from the menu board. It would help to have this board behind the serving area so that servers can see the words that customers are talking about. This could/should be combined with a numbering or lettering system for the beverage menu items. Additionally, staff seemed a little puzzled that my order should have been for takeaway rather than as part of a sit-down meal. If the logo is any indication then coffee is the core part of the business. So if anything, I should be the one who is more confused. Above all, the size issue needs fixing right away. Give us bigger cups!
If they can get the coffee right, then flow-on effects like extra dine-in customers and food purchases will surely follow. For now, I want to give Small Potato a rating of 2.5*. That is just for coffee, mind you. I would encourage readers to browse other reviews for a more complete overview. But for some, knowing about the coffee is all they...
Read moreWe went to Chai wan by accident. Tried to find some place to have a drink near the MTR and found this resturant.
My girl was attacted by the parrots outside the restaurant. The restaurant owner was a nice couple. They let my girl feed and play with the parrots.
After it, we had dinner in this restaurant.
This is a lovely and children-friendly restaurant. There is a large parrots wall painting, a doll clamping machine and a playing corner for children.
We are not very hungry today so we just ordered shared two dinner set : Hot pan New Zealand steak and baked potato with onion rings and salmon herb.
The dinner set came with salad and garlic bread. We added the pumpkin soup and special hot drinks.
The salad, garlic bread and pumpkin soup are fine. The Hot pan New Zealand steak is delicious. But the salmon is a little bit overcooked which is not very soft. I really like the special hot drink, not too sweet and tasty.
Price is not low as others but is acceptable because it seems like the only special restaurant around. The kid meal looks fabulous. My kids may try next time if we come again.
