They say you get what you pay for but this hostel didn't even meet my low expectations. To start with I found the staff super unfriendly. After checking in we were accused of having invalid visas (which was not the case!) and that we must leave China at once. We were offered little to no apology once they realised their mistake. ||||The hotel itself seemed empty and the lights were off in the upstairs chill out area every evening as no one was about. The lobby/bar area was also closed the whole of our stay. The cafe area was open but the drinks was over priced for Shanghai. The lobby area also had a pond where most of the water had evaporated leaving the poor fish in there pretty much swimming sideways. ||Our room was small and cramped with paper thin walls (A customer complained we were talking to loudly at around 6pm!). To make things even more interesting the toilet/shower room had a see through door which faced the bed. This meant one of us had to leave the room or turn our backs every time we needed to use the toilet. Otherwise you were forced to watch as they did their business. The toilet was also home to other guests; cockroaches. A total of about 10 of the things visited us while we stayed there. ||||Also the day after we were told to keep the noise down we were awoken at around 8am by two builders chatting as if they were in a wind tunnel, waking us up on the only day we could afford a lay in. ||||The only plus point I can find for this place is the location. It's not too far from the centre of Shanghai (10 minutes on the subway) and was also really close to the Vietnamese Consulate (The reason we were stuck there 5 days as we were waiting on our VISAs!). ||||All in all this is probably the shoddiest hostel I have ever...

Read moreThe hostel is close to the subway (Dalian Road, Line 4). The room service is ok - the staff speaks English, Wi-Fi signal is good (it's best to get a local carrier SIM-card), they come to take garbage bags and even replaced towels. Don't expect anything extraodinary in the decor of the rooms, quite plain, but single and double rooms have non-shared bathrooms, stayed for 7 nights and never had any problems with hot water. Never seen any foreigners staying either, only Chinese. Moisture smell in the lobby and halls might disturb some people, it didn't disturb me so my stay was perfectly fine. Rooms are small but it makes it easier to warm it up when it's cold (I was afraid that it will be too cold in the room but it was fine, just kept the temperature high all the time). Proximity to most of the sights makes it even more attractive. For people who don't care about interior design and want to save money it's a perfect place. There is a mall near the place so there is no problem where to eat (McDonalds, Starbucks, Chinese restaurants, TESCO ...
