Star Restaurant — Restaurant in Shanghai

Google Maps calls it "Star Restaurant" but the business card that one of the managers gave us names it EStory.

Staff were amazing- they served us really quickly and were happy that we were there. Food is typically Shanghainese and is very different to the stuff that we get here- no MSG found at this place, and no, there won't be any chips and curry sauce here, jeezus!

Upon entering you are ushered to the right of the restaurant to a room lined with pictures of the food and you literally just point and order. Before you go into the dining hall they take your drink order; the local wheat beer is a good option. You're then sat at your table. It sounds a bit chaotic but it just makes perfect sense to order like this, think "if Lidl made restaurants it would be like this". I would suggest that you use Google Translate set to Chinese (simplified) in case you want to order off piste, like extra beer or chilli oil.

Food is exceptional and service was quick. Just as a heads up, this is a restaurant where locals eat and we had diners, kids mostly, coming up to us asking us if we liked Shanghai and if we were enjoying our stay. Head chef even came out to greet and take a picture with us.

There were five of us and we ordered two bottles of beer, around 7 or 8 dishes and came to around £13 each with tips. Just as an FYI they didn't expect anything extra as there isn't a tipping culture but they were so lovely we wanted to show our appreciation.

Visiting Star Restaurant was an absolute delight! The traditional Chinese cuisine served here was not only delicious but also beautifully presented.
