I am not an expert on coffee and coffee farms but this finca and the offerred tour has improved my knowledge a lot and I feel more passionate about good coffee! Finca Momota is a great example of how coffee farms look like and what it takes to produce high quality coffee beans. The passion of the owners is reflected everwhere. We learned about the history of the farm and the projects that are ongoing or planned that will transform it in the next years, the coffee varieties, how a coffee tree starts in the nursery as a bean to become a full blown tree, how it interacts with its surroundings, how to pick coffee cherries etc. Of course we spend time learning how to properly prepare (and drink!) a good cup of coffee, the different methods of processing the beans and how they are roasted.
The nature in the farm is amazing, Carla and Uri really love what they do and they are more than happy to share their knowledge and love about coffee with everyone interested. The tour is approximately 3 hours.
Bottom line, the tour is highly recommended and it was one of the best experiences during our trip...
Read moreMy boyfriend Blake and I went on the Finca Momota coffee tour with Carla last Friday and we had such a pleasant experience. She gives you a tour of the farm and she explains all about the entire process of growing coffee! I have a new found respect for coffee farmers now that I never thought about before. She also talks all about the farm itself and gives a great Biodiversity tour. You get to learn all about the climate in Salento and what can grow there. Her farm is also beautiful and so secluded!
Carla and her family welcomed us into her home and were very accommodating and kind. :) I highly recommend this tour for a 'local' type of experience.
One thing to note. It does rain a lot in Salento. Wear shows that are walking shoes as the place is a little hard to find and you may need to walk through the mud. Once you get to the sign for the hostel on your left (a ways down the dirt pathway) you will curve up the left side past the hostel and you will see a sign for Momota! Otherwise there are no signs and Googlemaps is...
Read moreI'll admit that there are some mixed reviews about this tour. I believe I just happened to go on a good day. I arrived to the farm around 9:30am where I met the owner. We chatted a lot and I got to learn a lot about his background and all the places he's traveled.
Our guide was Norberto and he showed us around the farm and explained some facts and history of coffee in Colombia. We did the 1 hour tour but he usually goes on for about 2 hours and we get to sample one type of coffee at the end.
It's not the most structured tour. The owners are quite new and they're kind of just starting to grow their farm. Norberto tends to go on in tangents and sometimes it's a little hard to understand his English. Just make sure to ask a lot of questions and he will be happy to answer them.
With that being said, I admire their effort and hard work. They are stretched a bit thin being short staffed hence their reviews being so mixed. So I hope you encounter them...
