La Barbacoa — Restaurant in Cárdenas

It seemed that every restaurant in varadero was serving lobster, so it was a hard choice but I think I made the right one in the end. At first it started off a bit rocky simply because I,was not a Spanish speaker and there was some confusion over how to pay. I asked if I could pay with my MasterCard and was told yes. My card was returned and I was told it didn't work so I paid by cash. But the most important thing was the food, it was beautiffuly presented and was absolutely delicious and fresh.

It was served with pineapple rice, peppers and a bit of salad and melted garlic butter. I also ordered a Bucannero Malta drink to go with it. The service was great and the manager spoke reasonable English. I would recommend this restaurant witthout hesitation. To confirmed my recommendation after I had my meal I went back to the hotel and checked my bank account, it turned out that the payment had left my account, the reception at the hotel called them and told them and i was asked to go back to collect the payment next day and I was paid back the full amount taken from my card, in cash.

Had higher expectations for this place. Came the first night and they told us they didn’t have any food… that should’ve been the first red flag.

Came back tonight, sat down and from the 25 options on the menu they had 4 items available. Again another red flag but we stayed because they had a 4.40 stars…

Food arrives our “rib steak” was a skinny over cooked flank steak and the fish didn’t taste like fish..

I usually only leave good reviews but the two waiters who served us were extremely unpleasant and were not unapologetic for the lack of options.

They refuse to take credit cards and Cuban pesos so be prepared to pay in CAD | USD | EURO at the exact same conversion rate.

Would strongly recommend not coming...

I went there twice and it was definitely the best meals I had in Cuba the whole week. The steak was amazing and the lobster was great!

There was a band playing both times so there was a great ambiance!

Go there if you don't want to play Russian roulette with your stomach :) prices are reflected in the quality of the products, I was happy to spend 40$ for the surf and turf, it was the most tender beef I ate since a long time

Only issue is that products changes daily, so there are chances you can't get the exact same thing...
