This place required reservations which we made almost 2 months in advance before arriving in Havana. When we entered there was a fabulous 2nd floor was even more glamorous Hall was lovely arches. The views over the side of The balconies were also amazing. Prior to dining we went to the lounge bar which was the roof top. It had a plush purple lounge sofa a great bar great service in an open air seating area. This all overlooked old Havana and head a kind of Art Deco lighting added to the nostalgia. Finally after our cot tills it was time for our dinner where we were escorted back to another level. We set in a quaint nook with Stained glass windows and shutters viewing art across the way. ,We had some mackerel fish tacos for an appetizer. This was probably the tastiest thing that was served and I could have eaten it all night. The bread was also very good fresh hot out of the Oven. I had Grilled snapper topped with peppers and banana chips alongside of salted vegetables. My friend had baked chicken rice and beans which were ample .The food was prepared well and displayed .It is however very apparent that they lack many spices herbs and seasoning in their country. Or they are very light handed using it as this was the case in pretty much all the places I ate at in Cuba. We were constantly asking for salt and pepper to add to our meals. Other than that we were pretty much satisfied and content with the authentic tastes . This place probably has the best ambience, atmosphere Quality of food and service .

My wife and I had the pleasure of dining and spending the evening at La Guarida. We sat at a picture framed marble balcony third floor table overlooking evening Havana. We were greeted on the main level by the doorman and escorted up a giant winding marble staircase. The service was exquisite. The menu was mouth watering and world class. We dined on Octupus, Marlin Tacos, Tuna, I could go on. The evening then proceeded up the another narrow marble staircase to a roof top patio where a gorgeous seating area overlooked even more of Havana. It was something right out of a movie or dream. The concierge approached me and offered a tray of various size cigars to choose from. As I’m an avid cigars smoker, you can imagine the feeling. I chose a BHK 62 as I knew it would be a couple hour smoke. We sipped on hand made Old Fashioned and red wine. Out of nowhere, two gentlemen arrived followed by a crowd of 20. The applause and congratulations were flying around this room. It was clear something amazing had transpired. We soon learned that the head bartender from La Guarida, had just won the national bartending championship that very evening and we were in the middle of the celebration. Yes I’ve told my story and made you imagine and picture what this evening looked like. It’s a personal experience at La Guarida and one you should absolutely experience. If you told me it was an extension of heaven, I could probably nod in agreement.

When we chose this restaurant, it seemed like a well-established institution. However, our experience suggested that it didn’t quite live up to the expectations set by its Google reviews and the surrounding hype. While the standard of food is still quite good by Cuban standards, it fell short of what we anticipated. The setting was nice, when you walk in there is the speech written by Fidel Castro on the wall next to the stairs which is a popular spot for photos. The aesthetic of the interior is nice and provides a good vibe for dining. Despite being regarded as one of the best restaurants in Cuba, there were some glaring issues. One glass contained an unidentified floating object, and the sparkling water was completely off, arriving pre-opened and undrinkable. The fish of the day was snapper, which was well-prepared and complemented by a flavorful sauce. The texture of the fish was fine and easy to chew. The 50-day dry-aged ribeye was served with a hot plate, allowing us to sear the steak ourselves. While the concept was interesting, the execution left much to be desired. The aging process was evident in the texture and flavor notes of the steak, but it didn’t quite reach the expectations of a premium dry-aged cut. It was accompanied by grilled capsicum, potatoes, salt, and a sweet-and-sour sauce intended to enhance the self-searing experience. Next, we tried the saffron oxtail risotto. Although it carried the scent of saffron, it lacked the authenticity of true saffron infusion. Unfortunately, the dish was unbearably salty, overshadowing any other flavors. The lobster dish was similarly disappointing. It was overly salty and had an unpleasant raw seafood odor, suggesting it wasn’t fresh enough. The ropa vieja was slightly better—above average and, thankfully, not overly salty. As for desserts, the rice pudding was bland, appearing prepackaged. The cheesecake was below average, though the touch of cheddar was an interesting twist that gave it a semblance of being a true cheesecake. The triple chocolate dessert was the standout highlight—rich and satisfying. Another notable dessert was the lemon tart with meringue, which offered a pleasant and refreshing conclusion to the meal. At the end, it took about half an hour to receive the bill and sort out payments, which was far too long for us and prevented us from spending the rest of our night somewhere else. In summary, while Le Guarida shows promise, its reputation didn’t align with the actual experience. A few standout dishes aside, the inconsistencies in preparation and quality were hard to overlook. Thank you

Tucked into a neat neighborhood in downtown Havana there is La Guarida. Even though I have been to Cuba for years this paladar was recommended as being one of the originals. The building is amazing. Oh, they are on WhatsAp and their communication is outstanding. I wanted the roof top experience and was hoping for live music but during my visit it was not on the schedule. I traveled there with one of my Havana natives. We had great seating and could see the beautiful skyline of Havana. Service was OK and I was about the order a more traditional drink - Cuba Libre, Mojitos, etc. but my friend said hold on, and ordered us a Caprioska. It was well prepared. We also ordered an appetizer. As we were about to order my friend kept reviewing the menu and finally confessed, La Guarida is an amazing venue but it is more suited for tourist. He pointed out our drink, even in pesos came in at about $10. Woah!! He suggested we wrap up the experience and head to a place that was more suited for locals and swore the prices would be a fraction of what La Guarida offered, even with all of its historic ambience. Good idea. Although I am glad we went for the experience. So, for me it will be one and done!!!!

Very disappointing experience. Supposedly the best and most expensive restaurant in Havana but only the latter was true. Our expectations were high when we received our appetizers. The thinly sliced octopus was simply great in an excellent sauce. The eggplant caviar was not as great but very good. It went downhill from there very quickly. Our order of suckling pig had a smell and aftertaste that I couldn’t tell whether it had gone bad or not. We had also ordered the glazed tuna and had asked that it be prepared medium rare. It came way overcooked and dry as a brick. They attempted to replace it. They must have removed the new one right out of the refrigerator before cooking. Although cooked right, it was very cold in the center and we couldn’t enjoy it or even finish it. I must admit the plates were decorated extremely nicely. One of the sides we ordered was yuca with Cuban mojo. There was not mojo and no taste at all. Our order of Moro rice never came. We also ordered a Goxua sponge cake for dessert to share. We were warned that it would be too sweet but didn’t expect to feel the grits on undisolved sugar in our mouths. I wouldn’t go back.
