Hideaway Bar & Grill — Restaurant in Kolonia

We saved this place for or final night after 6 days in Ponhpei on recommendation of the crew we were working with. Down an extrememly steep drive way (glad we drove and didn't walk down from our hotel at Cliff Rainbow Hotel, Ponhpei). The layout and design of the place is wonderful, and was the only place we ate at in Kolonia that had any real atmosphere. It was surprisingly busy for a Wednesday night, but I suppose as the main 'good' restauarant , all the development agency crowd were here. Menu was simple and 'utltitarian' in reality, and in our opinin the food was no better nor worse than any of the other places in Ponhpei. The place and atmosphere was what givese this plae the edge though. We ordered poke to start, and as with most dishes in Ponhpei, came with more raw onions and more heavily salted than anticipated. This is obviously the Ponhpei Style of doing sushi/poke/sashimi :) We chose the 'special of the house' stuffed tuna and sauted Prawns. The stuffed tuna is a deep fried tuna steak stuffed with what appeared to be canned crab meat (very wet), with a side coleslaw and huge pile of rice (derigour in FSM). Sauted prawns were 'from frozen', but well prepared, served in a sauce with plenty of, you guessed it, onions. They do have a Teppenyaki table in a separate area, and they ask that you book that the day...

The hideaway has a great atmosphere with the jungle vibes. I only went here in the evening, so I don't know how it looks during the day, but I imagine it's equally nice.

There are good options for food, not everything is great, but I was never disappointed. The set meals with tuna sashimi are great and I particularly like the seared tuna.

For Pohnpei standards definitely one of the best...

This is definitely worth a visit if you're on Pohnpei. It's slightly more expensive than the average restaurant, but it's well worth it for the vibe, and the food is pretty good as well. The staff is also very nice. If you're visiting Pohnpei, eating a meal at Hideaway will help you appreciate the natural beauty...
