“GEN Korean BBQ: A Rare Gen-mistake”

Ah, GEN Korean BBQ House. I came in hungry and left… well, still hungry but with a fascinating story about how bad Korean BBQ can actually be.

First off, the ambiance is an odd mix of Korean and dentist’s office. the flickering lights overhead gave me flashbacks to the one time I accidentally microwaved foil.

The service? Imagine summoning a genie who takes your three wishes and gives you half of one, three hours later. The staff would disappear into the smoky ether, only to reemerge like rare Pokémon—impossible to find and utterly unhelpful when caught. Asking for more meat felt like negotiating with a loan shark: time-consuming, nerve-wracking, and ultimately not worth it.

As for the food itself, the “meat” (if we’re being generous) looked like it had been sitting in a tanning bed for days, with cuts so thin I considered calling a scientist to carbon-date them. The grill was about as functional as a George Foreman on strike, with one corner hotter than the sun and the other as cold as my enthusiasm by the end of the meal.

And let’s not forget the side dishes, which came in portions so small I thought I’d accidentally ordered from the kids’ menu. I’m pretty sure the kimchi was just spicy pickles, and the “spicy pork belly” tasted suspiciously like regret.

By the end, my table was a battlefield of burnt dreams and charred scraps. The only thing cooked to perfection was my patience. If GEN Korean BBQ were a video game, it would be an unskippable tutorial on how not to run a restaurant.

Would I recommend it? Sure, if you’re writing a dissertation on subpar dining experiences or need a new “worst first date” story. Otherwise, save your money and just grill your own...

We went to Fiji for a 10-day holiday and we had 4 of our dinners in this restaurant. The prices of their food are very reasonable. If you order a samgyupsal for yourself, it would be enough since there will be few sides already plus a bowl of rice!
