Ravintola Sumu — Restaurant in Lappeenranta sub-region

First it has to be said: the food has the most finesse in the city. Quality ingredients with innovative and delicious flavors. Would definately eat again...

But the food is only half the experience in a fine dining restaurant, and this restaurant stumbled and choked on a very poor and unsatisfactory table service.

We (company of two) asked for another table by the window but the waitress was reluctant to move us since it was going to be a busy night and the other table was reserved also. There we sat in an other table for 4 people and watched as no one sat on the particular windowside table the whole night. It is not the staff's job to tell customers they are busy and they are just summer workers there. That kind of information just worsens the whole experience.

The overall service was poor, the staff did not bother serving us drinks since we hadn't ordered a wine package beforehand and when asked they brought the drinks list.

Presenting dishes ranged from good to very poor: i.e. the waitress forgot what was on the plate and instead of going to the kitchen to make sure we were given giggles and "well, there's something" description.

The city surely needs higher level restaurants, but I would not recommend this by our experience. It is the owners responsibility to educate the dining room staff: now it looked the staff was just thrown into the dining area without any knowledge how to run...

That was my birthday celebration and we decided to try this place. And let me tell you, it was a unique experience that you can find only in Michelin restaurants. We chose 6 courses meal, 4 courses meal and 2 courses meal. The kids had 2 courses meal but half price, because their portions were smaller and they were perfectly fine with it. I also chose wine package to go with my 6 courses meal. Sumu masterfully blends classic Scandinavian flavors with fresh, modern twists using seasonal, local ingredients from Saimaa—land and sea alike .The tasting menus are a true culinary journey, with creative flavor combinations and elegant plating. Wine pairings are thoughtfully chosen, and the service is warm and attentive. Our server was excellent!!!The desserts stand out as highlights—beautifully plated and delivering powerful finishing notes that guests remember long after the meal is over. We loved sea buckthorn sorbet with licorice. It was amazing!!!
