Had a delightful dining experience upstairs today, where our server was not just friendly and polite but practically a superhero in disguise. Attentive yet not the least bit nosy—just the way you want it. At one point, a rogue wasp decided to join the party (and I'm deathly allergic to those little beasts). Our server didn't just save the day; she (I think?) escorted the wasp out with all the grace of a bouncer at a posh club. No casualties—except maybe the wasp's ego.
The ambiance was spot-on: cozy and quiet, perfect for a meal without distractions. Well, except for the gazillion flies hanging out in the window. But hey, it's that time of year. They weren’t interested in our food, just auditioning for a remake of Fly Away Home.
Now, onto the grub. We started with the house bread and olive paste, and let me tell you, that bread was the real deal. Moving on to the main event, the carbonara was lovely—even without the parmesan, which we asked to be left off. They delivered as requested, and it was still a winner. The salmon? Absolutely fantastic. So, if you're looking for a place with great food and a server who could moonlight as a wasp...
Read moreAte this Bolognese here. I also tried the pesto pasta dish my dinner company had. To put it bluntly this was a technically well made pasta dish ruined by lack of actual flavour which unfortunately is something that is often seen in Finnish chain restaurants.
Makaronitehdas offering felt like the "koti pizza" of quality pastas: use good ingredients but remove the taste. However, there are many people in Finland who like the neutral taste of Kotipizza and that is totally fine. For me this was a one off.
Oh and one more thing if you decide to drink tap water (with ice) it costs you 0.80 €, which is a bit ehh.
To end on a good note the service was nice and fast, which is good to see. Also the setting and atmosphere in the restaurant are cozy and they fit the brand very well.
P.S. One tip for the chef: don't use cream in your carbonara. Use the boiled pasta water. It makes the creamy sauce work so...
Read moreUsed to be one of the nicest places to go in Hanko, but sadly everything has become much worse as of late. The service is very bad now, the waiters we had were not trained at all. We didn’t have any cutlery and the prices were not what they were supposed to be. The waiter had to redo our check 3 times to get it to be right, and we had to ask to get cutlery and glasses. The food was nothing special, a small portion of pasta for 16€ and the carbonara had no flavour to it. The antipasto was pathetically small for 19€, truly not worth it. Such a shame as this used to be our go to place in Hanko, but we won’t be returning...
