âDinner in a French restaurantâ is sentence not too hard to deliver. But often, for some at least, it comes with fear of an impatient waiter, a menu where few words on the menu are known as an edible item or a look of derision when a poor combination of food and wine is chosen. And then, even if a booking is possible, the food will not quite meet expectations and as inexperienced diners in France, we leave, thankful the ordeal is over and the bill settled.
But what if, down a narrowing and sloping street in Angers, you come across a Bistro that seems quietly confident of its ability to welcome, provide and satisfy those looking for a menu that covers most tastes, but does it with excellence?
This little place is tucked between restaurants far louder in appearance, but itâs conservative approach to decor serves only to prepare diners for a comfortably âproperâ French experience but without the stresses that go with it. Arrive at 7pm and you may get one of the last tables available, and with a smile. By 7.30 youâll be hoping someone is going to be rushing their dinner in the hope of a second sitting. In reality, they wonât though. Theyâll want to keep their table for the evening.
With more of their relaxed confidence, bread, aperitifs and water arrive along with menus. Then itâs time to settle back, not to plough through line after line of dishes too fanciful to decipher, but simply to decide which will satisfy the pallet this evening.
With quiet efficiency and professionalism, courses will appear and be cleared in such a way that only when you leave will you realise what âattentiveâ service is all about. But additionally, the little extras that come with dinner do not detract or seem to persuade you that it is a good place to spend the evening, but rather they come across as genuine âthankyousâ for entrusting the staff with your evening.
By the time you ready this, our menu choices may have changed as summer gives way to autumn. But the beef was prepared wonderfully. The prawns and pasta satisfied the most critical of diners. Entreeâs in themselves were so good, perhaps a main course too was simply greedy. Deserts were rather special too; the retention of flavours in mouses and sorbets startling.
In many British restaurants, perhaps what is lacking in quality (often) is made up with quantity. Here, in this narrow street in Angers, the quality is so good, you have to slow down, prolong the courses just to savour the tastes and textures on the plate. It seems like dinner lasts an eternity and the plates enormous. But no. Sensibly sizes plates deliver flavours in such a way that quantity is very much not required.
Oh, and the cost including a good bottle of wine? How does less than âŹ30 per person sound?

   Read moreArriving without a reservation after an eight hour drive we were pleased to get a cheery welcome and a good table on the first floor. A glass of sauv blanc for my wife was quickly served from a newly opened bottle at our table and I started with a small pression, which turned out to be Leffe. Bread, with butter and herby sauce was brought immediately. My wife's warm goats cheese & duck salad was rated excellent, while I very much enjoyed a thick piece of steamed cod served on a bed of lentil shaped pasta, with dried tomatoes and tiny turnips in a prawn sauce, and some romanesque cauli spears. I chose a glass of chardonnay to go with this, again served from a new bottle opened at the table. The restaurant was now full, but service remained cheery and good. For dessert we shared a delicious dark chocolate salted mousse and a strawberry vacherin with raspberry sauce. The waiter insisted we should have a complimentary cherry liqueur and marshmallow strips to complete the meal, leaving the man at the till to work out the bill, which was reasonable. The whole area of Angers to the north of the castle was full of people enjoying a Friday night on the town and I think we did well to get such a good meal at a moderate price with nothing at all to mar...

Nous avions rĂ©servĂ© pour un midi et sommes arrivĂ©s Ă l'heure au restaurant, Ă midi pile. Ă l'arrivĂ©e, un groupe de serveurs Ă©tait rĂ©uni au fond du restaurant et nous avons patiemment attendu quelques minutes avant de nous avancer poliment parce que personne ne semblait vouloir s'occuper de nous (malgrĂ© le fait qu'ils nous aient vus). Un serveur vient nous dire que nous Ă©tions censĂ©s attendre Ă l'entrĂ©e mais que nous ne pouvions pas le savoir car il n'avait pas mis la pancarte qui l'indiquait. On s'excuse et on demande Ă ĂȘtre placĂ©s si possible en terrasse. Cette derniĂšre est globalement rĂ©servĂ©e mais on arrive Ă nous dĂ©nicher une table juste Ă cĂŽtĂ© de la porte d'entrĂ©e, en extĂ©rieur mais couverte. C'Ă©tait gentil de la part du serveur mais je ne recommande pas cette table car les gens font la queue juste Ă cĂŽtĂ© de vous pour rentrer et ça devient rapidement trĂšs peu intimiste ; tout le monde parle Ă cĂŽtĂ© de vous et lorgne sur votre assiette.
Le serveur nous apporte en amuse-gueule du pain et un genre de fromage blanc ail et fines herbes. C'est sympathique et une bonne mise en bouche pour démarrer le repas. Le pain était vraiment trÚs bon et frais.
Nous commandons ensuite deux plats figurant au menu dĂ©jeuner. Pluma de cochon au tandoori massala et faux filet saignant sauce angevine. On va commencer par le positif ; la piĂšce de bĆuf est de belle taille, bien cuite et de bonne qualitĂ©. La sauce angevine est dĂ©licieuse avec un bon goĂ»t d'Ă©chalotes et de vin. La pluma de cochon est bonne, tendre et suffisamment assaisonnĂ©e. Par contre les accompagnements ce n'est pas trop ça. Les frites sont des frites surgelĂ©es, et je n'ai pas fini les accompagnements de la pluma de cochon. Une tĂȘte de brocolis bouillie, une carotte Ă l'eau et de la purĂ©e de petits pois presque pas assaisonnĂ©e. Un unique palet de pomme de terre qui Ă©tait bon mais se finissait en une bouchĂ©e. Ce n'est pas franchement une rĂ©ussite, ce qui est dommage car les viandes Ă©taient trĂšs bien.
En dessert nous avons partagé une brioche perdue qui était copieuse et trÚs bonne. Je n'en ai pris qu'une bouchée car je n'avais déjà plus faim.
Le service était sympathique et convenable, pas grand chose à dire là -dessus.
La note est douce car on est sur un dĂ©jeuner midi. Si j'avais pris les mĂȘmes plats sur la carte du soir, j'aurais trouvĂ© ça trop cher pour la qualitĂ© globale du repas.
