Le Relais de la Tour — Restaurant in Belley

We stopped here hoping to have a drink and maybe a dessert. When we arrived, we asked if we could sit inside since it was cold, but were told that drink-only seating was only available at one of the many empty tables outside. After being seated and given the drinks-only menu, we waited quite some time for service but were ignored by staff. Eventually, we were informed that they were not serving drinks unless we were eating.

We said we would be happy to order dessert, but were still refused, and quite abruptly. Throughout each interaction, the staff member was dismissive, and the tone felt unnecessarily rude and condescending.

I’ve never had an experience like this in a small town, and it was genuinely disappointing. If there were restrictions on seating or service at that time, that would be understandable—but this could have been communicated politely and clearly from the beginning.

We visited Le Relais de la Tour for some hot drinks and hoped to relax on the terrace. The outdoor area was quite nice, but the table we sat at had not been cleared. We waited and tried a few times to signal staff, but no one came over to acknowledge us or take an order.

After a while, we were told that drinks would only be served to guests who were also having a full meal. It would have been helpful to know this in advance, before being seated and left waiting. The communication throughout felt dismissive, and the overall atmosphere was unwelcoming.

The reason I write a review is to tell how attentive the service was. It was very cold outside so when we arrived, I used my napkin to clean my nose- the waiter gave me immediately another one....I told them I am allergic to the mustard, they called immediately the kitchen chef who told me what can I eat from the buffet and what not. After 2 minutes he arrived with a huge salad, prepared just for me with olive oil..!!THIS is service, perfect! By the way charming restaurant with the fireplaces and excellent food ( especially the duck ) definitely...
