LE JARDIN DE SAINT SEBASTIEN — Restaurant in Céret

We had a great evening's dining at "Le Jardin". There are a dozen or so tables and soon after opening, all filled up within twenty minutes. This was a little overwhelming for the single serveuse but she handled it with smiles and speed as well as grace that seemed to be welcomed by all guests despite some slight ordering delays. It's a nice garden setting and when I mentioned to my wife it was a little dark for my old eyes to read some details of the menu, voila, the serveuse heard and moved a light so the problem was solved. The menu has about 10 entrees and the same number of plats; this is enough selection for the modest sized kitchen. The wine list is local and most are available by the glass so it is easy to pair with dishes without breaking the wallet. There's also a decent selection of beers. I started with tempura prawns paired with an IPA. The batter was a little overcooked but the prawns still moist; very nice. Plenty of fish on the menu and my merlin was moist and not overcooked. Paired it with a delicious tangy and slightly fruity Clos San Sebastien Inspirations Minerale. The kale flakes we're a nice texture contrast but the other legumes were slightly overcooked with little crunch left in the brocolli, carrots, and cauliflower. Although my plat was good, it was out-shone by the fabulous brioche perdue with caramelized apples which I paired with a glass of delicious Banyuls Grand Cru. We were impressed by the food and the high quality of the service. Everybody, including the clients, seems to be nice there.

My only slight objection would be on the wines offered. I fully understand they feel proud of their local wineries, but I would kindly suggest that a more standard red should be available. The Grenache grape is quite peculiar in flavor, and it is a kind of love it or hate it situation, specifically for red wines. This being said, we had a rosé that was very good.

Nach vielen Jahren mit sehr guten Erfahrungen hat sich das hübsche Restaurant in den letzten Jahren leider sehr negativ entwickelt (offensichtlich hat der Betreiber vor ein paar Jahren gewechselt). Bereits letztes Jahr waren wir vom Essen sehr enttäuscht. Trotz dieser negativen Erfahrung wollten wir dem Team in diesem Jahr nochmals eine Chance geben. Unser Fazit: Das Ambiente und vor allem die Weine sind immer noch sehr gut. Der Service war nicht aufmerksam und hat auf unsere Reklamation wegen dem Essen mit einem Achselzucken reagiert. Die Vorspeise (Ceviche) war geschmacklich gut aber sehr lieblos und unappetitlich präsentiert. Der Hauptgang (Schweinemedaillon mit Gemüse) war wahrscheinlich das Schlechteste was wir je in einem Restaurant serviert bekommen haben. Alles war viel zu lange gegart (Gemüse matschig und wässrig, das Fleisch trocken) und überhaupt nicht abgeschmeckt. Wir haben fast die ganze Portion retourniert (es war wirklich fast ungeniessbar). Ich habe dem Chef de Service beim Bezahlen unsere Erfahrung erklärt und er hat es mehr oder weniger zur Kenntnis genommen - zumindest eine Entschuldigung hätte ich erwartet und wäre sicher auch angebracht gewesen. Leider können wir dieses Restaurant überhaupt nicht mehr empfehlen und werden erst nach einem Wechsel der Betreiber wieder hingehen.
