Terre&Mer calais — Restaurant in Calais

Expecting to revisit a previous Calais restaurant only to find it closed that day, we were lucky to come across another in the same square - Place D'armes. What a find that turned out to be as it soon showed to be an excellent discovery! Friendly staff and atmosphere. Not a largely English-speaking venue, but perfectly practical. The preponderance of local Calais customers inside during the evening definitely indicates its popularity and we found nothing to contradict their opinion! A good choice of meals on the menu, along with some very good draft beers too - Triple is worth trying! Flavour is excellent. As we were heading to the Ferry home later, sadly we had time only for main dishes. A large cauldron of creamy moules-frites and a substantial plateful of duck breasts proved to be more than enough for our appetites and provided a suitably delightful ending to our day away. The two staff who were on duty when we arrived did not make us feel welcome at all. We were told to take a table on the outside covered terrace area where no tables were laid up and it had a rather forlorn feel to it. Perhaps it was because we had a small dog with us. One of the waitress staff seemed too frightened to even serve us, even though our dog is really gentle. Eventually a guy, probably the manager came and he seems more engaged. You are spoilt for choice if you are looking for an eatery in Calais but this was an excellent choice. Clearly popular with locals and the menu reflects this with traditional options. Portions are huge, make sure you are hungry or consider sharing. It also got busy so ringing ahead to make a reservation might be a good idea. Toilets are spotless, great choice of beers and wines.
