We visited Camaret-sur-mer seven years ago, and this year we decided to spend our summer holiday there. And we were lucky in finding this excellent, friendly, family-run hotel, superbly situated on the harbour front, providing all the essentials but at very moderate prices. Camaret is a small seaside resort, a fishing port with a yachting marina and sandy beaches. At the Hotel du Styvel, most of the rooms overlook the harbour, with wonderful views of the boats, the Tour Vauban and the ancient chapel across the curve of the bay. We stayed for eleven nights, and strongly recommend the Styvel for a long stay because it is so relaxing and has such a warm atmosphere.||||The rooms are simple but contain all the necessities, and those on the first floor with balconies are a decent size, so the reasonable prices provide great value for money. We had fresh towels every day, and the place was kept spotlessly clean. The entire hotel is decorated harmoniously in red and gold colours, there are pleasant photographs and paintings of local scenes on the walls, and lots of mirrors. It even has its own restaurant, open to both residents and the general public (see my review of the Styvel restaurant). The main dining room and breakfast room on the ground floor look out on the harbour, and you can also eat on the sun terrace.||||Breakfast was served at our table - hunks of fresh baguettes, croissants, butter, jam and other spreads - and yoghurt, cereal and madeleines also available from the buffet. We had fresh orange juice and coffee (there was a choice of drinks). All very good.||||Madame Téphany, the owner, is a kind and generous host, very attentive to the guests in the hotel and restaurant. Her husband Georges doesn’t deal with front-of-house (he works hard in his own roles), but he always said Bonjour to us, smiled and sometimes waved as he drove through the village in his van. The standard of service is excellent. All the staff are efficient, pleasant and friendly, never failing to pass the time of day and give us a smile.||||Our room, number 2, has the largest bathroom, with good-sized shower cubicle and plenty of space (and a regular door). In the bedroom itself there was more than enough room to hang clothes and put away all our things for an eleven-day stay. The Hotel du Styvel is so affordable and has such good facilities that it is well worth stopping for more than a...

Read moreThe Styvel is a good, inexpensive hotel well located on the harbour front near the centre of Camaret. Don’t expect luxury or designer touches, but 59 euros for a harbour-view room was good value. The room was simply furnished but adequate, and the bathroom fairly modern and brightly lit. Our ‘vue de mer’ room had a lovely view across the harbour towards the Vauban tower. Despite facing the road it was quiet at night. There is some free private parking at the rear, wifi is free and the staff friendly. The restaurant (see separate review) is very good and better than we expected. Breakfast is basic ‘continental’: orange juice, baguette, croissant, but not wildly expensive. There was a bit of noise of footsteps and talking from the room above us now and then, but it was not bad. Our main criticism is that the lighting in the room was very dim and made reading at night difficult - the overhead light needed a bigger bulb, and the bedside lights had shades that made them useless for reading – this would be...
