Les Vins et une fourchette — Restaurant in Fougères-Vitré

Such a shame, I visited this restaurant in September 2022 as I cycled from St Malo to Nice and had the most amazing steak and wine with a wonderful host/chef at the grill and attentive staff; it was a joy. So I bought my wife here from the UK to celebrate our anniversary, sadly we left the place after 30 minutes having not been offered a drink and just been provided with some bread and meat. The poor single waitress was rushed off her feet as the place became busier. We were left feeling that the situation would not improve so left. We offered to pay the waitress for the bread but she refused and clearly understood that she could not, on her own, provide the service required. In September 2022 I would have given 5 stars all round for food, wine, service and atmosphere. Now in June 2023 I can really, sadly, only offer 1 star. Please get more staff, your steaks...

A pretty good lunch menu let down by vastly overpriced coffees. Our starters of a herring salad and a tomato and mozzarella salad were both very good. Also nice mains of salmon with tagliatelle and pork rib however, the latter was rather chewy. We ordered two cafés allongé at the end, assuming them to be single expressos diluted with hot water, as they are usually are in France. We were shocked to find they cost €4.40 each. The bill stated 2 'grande cafe' which essentially means 2 doubles though, still a hefty price! I queried this but was told it was correct! To us the coffees were definitely singles/cafés allongé (not strong enough to be otherwise). We left with a very bad taste in our mouths, feeling stung. We felt that as tourists we were taken advantage of. I doubt that the same would have happened...

We found this restaurant while walking around the town and decided to visit it in the evening. We received a warm welcome despite not having booked. We were served a fish pate with toasted bread fingers while we looked at the menu. We both went for the starter special of bouquet of chevettes with home made mayonnaise. My partner had the smoked entecote steak with roasted vegetables and dophonoise potatoes and I had the house special lamb with the house butter and salad. We finished with sorbet. The service was good and most of the food excellent, be prepared to use your fingers to get the best of the lamb. My partner thought his steak was smokey but lacked flavour and was chewy.
