Matahari Food Caravan — Restaurant in La Rochelle

A welcome veggie and vegan alternative to the mainstay majority of restaurant menus on the island which seem not to have not left the last century - unlike many of France's bigger cities which regularly offer exciting modern plant based restaurants and menus now.

This place had very helpful staff who decoded the freshly written menu board into detailed english for us. It was clear, but our french is imperfect so they were able to convey nuances of each dish carefully. Preferred the starters to the mains, the mains felt a little confused at times in their fusion of flavours but nonetheless the food was fresh, tasty, interesting and enjoyable. A surprise to find this vegetarian gem and a delight to eat here. Matahari Boui Boui has a lovely view of the fields, a shade covered seating area and room for around 25 people at any time. The menu is limited to just a handful of dishes. Each is made with delightful fresh ingredients and the provenance is listed on a board. Nous avons été très déçus du restaurant dont les critiques sont pourtant dithyrambiques. L'apparence est soignée, tant dans l'accueil que dans l'assiette, mais une fois en bouche le retour à la réalité est cruel. Les plats qui nous ont été servis manquaient d'assaisonnement et donnaient l'impression d'un assemblage sans idée précise. Le "snickers" du dessert a tout particulièrement déçu par la platitude des saveurs. Les graines auraient pu être grillées à la poêle par exemple, ou le chocolat aurait profité d'une touche d'acidité ou d'épice (comme du piment d'Espelette) pour le mettre en valeur.

C'est un restaurant que je conseillerai sans hésitation aux instagrammeurs.euses qui veulent faire de beaux clichés, et je ne doute pas que le personnel face sincèrement de son mieux, mais nous ne renouvellerons pas...
