Hippopotamus — Restaurant in Limoges

It's a mixed review, positive and negative 4 of the meals where lovely. But 2 where not worth it and not very nice. 4 adults had the new years party menu. The starters where tasty and we all enjoyed them, the chateaubriand was lovely, very tasty and a good sized portion, with plenty of skin on fries. The cod dish again was lovely and looked fresh and had no issues. The surf and turf, AVOID!! unfortunately was not worth the money at all. We weren't sure what the steak was. Very tough and looked horrible, the lobster was bland and tasteless, for an extra 10€ it certainly wasn't worth it and was an expensive dish! No garnish and a real disappointment! The best steak was off the little menu where there was a choice of 350 or 400g steak and was beautiful. Very tasty and well cooked , my son loved it and compared to the surf and turf, the surf and turf was laughable. Would we go back, yes! But because the chateaubriand and my sons steak made-up for the awful...

We'd been coming to Hippopotamus Limoges for many years on our way through from southern France, but this year has seen a major refurb, with the whole restaurant looking fresh and new.

Staff were welcoming and friendly, and the service was prompt and attentive without being overbearing or pushy.

The food was always good here but it has stepped up to another level. Interesting aperitifs (try 'Red Fizz' with gin, tonic and red fruits with black tea infusion), tasty and well-presented starters, followed by an excellent range of mains for all tastes - meat, fish and vegetarian. Desserts (if you can manage one at this point) are varied and delicious.

It's not the cheapest of steak houses, but the quality is more than reflected in the price. For aperitifs, starters, mains, desserts, coffee and a glass of wine, the price per head would be around €50.

All in all, a very welcome finish to a day of long driving, and highly...

Première fois en famille dans ce restaurant, et très déçu... Nous sommes arrivés à 19h45, prise de commande vers 20h10, jusqu'à là aucun soucis...c'est après que nous avons dû attendre plus d'une heure pour avoir nos plats !! Mes 2 enfants qui avaient pris 2 menus enfants ont été servis rapidement 10 min après la commande, du coup ils ont mangés en premier..et ont dû patienter 1h sur une chaise que nous commencions notre plat .. De plus les boissons ont été servis au début sauf pour 2 personnes qui ont été oubliés..nous avons dû réclamer les 2 boissons manquantes pendant les plats.. Autre point les carafes d'eau ne sont pas fraîches. Ensuite, on nous a donné un petit récipient avec quelques chips pour patienter, à 7 personnes autant dire que ça n' a pas durer longtemps, pareil pour le pain on est 7 on nous donne une petite panière avec 4 petits pains à l'intérieur..

Pour les points positifs côté cuisine : les rillettes de thon étaient très bonne et le pavé de saumon avec ses légumes étaient délicieux !

Donc voilà, pour mon expérience personnel mais il est clair que je ne reviendrais pas...les tarifs sont très élevés...20,90 euros pour des rillettes de thon, un fish and fish avec une poignée de frite et un petit orangina c'est très très cher surtout que c'est quasi les mêmes proportions qu'un menu enfant à 8,90 euros !

De plus le serveur, qui s'est excusé pour l'attente ne nous a même pas fait un geste commercial par rapport à la longue attente... Bref première fois mais malheureusement...
