Atelier 29 — Restaurant in Montpellier

Sometimes it's worth going the extra half mile. This evening we walked a bit out of town to a small restaurant that specialises in grilled (or otherwise) meat. Bit worried that it was almost empty when we arrived but it's midweek and thunderstorms are forecast. However we shouldn't have been concerned. Really welcoming staff and indeed other customers. Our French isn't great. Proprietors English isn't great. But we made do in the spirit of entente cordiale (remember that?) and on the rare occasion we struggled the adjacent tables of locals pitched in to help.

Hospitality at its best.

The food was brilliant too. My flame-grilled sirloin was literally á point. My wife's tartare was somewhat less cooked 😁. Great local wine that unsurprisingly went very well with steak. Delightful shared dessert.

Atelier 29 was on my list for a while now so we decided to attack on a Saturday night for a nice steak dinner with a glass of red wine / beer 🍺 and indeed the steak was very nice! J’ai mangé des côtes incroyables : tendres, juteuses et pleines de saveur — sans même besoin de sauce ! La salade végane a été une belle surprise : colorée, fraîche et avec des textures parfaitement équilibrées. L’ambiance est chaleureuse, aérée et familiale. Le service est top. Et pour les étrangers, c’est une super adresse : le personnel parle anglais ! Je recommande à 100 %.

I had the most amazing ribs: juicy, tender, and full of flavor — no sauce needed! The vegan salad was another delicious surprise: colorful, fresh, and full of perfect textures. The place has a warm, airy, and family-friendly vibe. Service is excellent. And for foreigners, it’s a great choice — the staff speaks English! Highly recommended.
