If you find yourself in Hesdin (and you should try to) then this place is a "must eat" at venue. We went on a Thursday evening (market day in Hesdin) so it was busy, we popped in whilst wandering round the market and booked our table, and I am glad we did. The name says it all regarding what to expect on entry. Charming surroundings, clean, comfortable and just easy on the eye. There is also the option of outdoor seating in pleasant surroundings just across from the ever flowing Canche river, perfect for people watching, weather permitting. On to the drinks, we tried the Affligem blonde with our meal, this is originally a Belgian abbey beer which is full of taste. It starts with citrus notes and ends with a lovely malty, hoppy finish. We weren't disappointed. The carafe served wine was also described as just the ticket. For our meal, we skipped the starter and went straight for the mains. One of our party had boeuf bourguignon 14.00 euros (a special on the day). She is a bit of an aficionado when it comes to this, and she declared it the BEST she has ever had. I had the scallops 17.00 euros and yes, they were huge, beautifully cooked and delicious. The chaps decided to go for the charcuterie plancha - the deli meats board. They had been competing all week for the most outrageously large meal, and this was it..... They each chose the large board 16.00 euros (and boy, is it large) I don't think they understand the concept of sharing. It comes with pickles and a constant supply of french bread. It would probably have served a family..... Anyway, they both said it was fabulous! The staff were attentive and friendly throughout and were happy to chat away with you or leave you to eat in peace if that is what you wanted. We did go on to puddings, and they were also great. I expected the meal to be more expensive than our previous meals in Hesdin, but it was on a par, therefore, I am voting La Belle Epoque as my favourite in Hesdin. Do try it if you get a chance. I am struggling to add photos at the moment, but will try again later, but warn you that the large charcuterie board was the length of my arm..... And...
Read more12 of us had a late night meal on Friday 11 August. Live music outside and the place was packed with many who enjoyed the 70s/80s music that was played. We all enjoyed the food ; good value and plentiful (beef bourguignon a highlight). Kids menu is good for those not quite into French food.... Lovely deserts (a good Creme brulee).
Very mischievous waiters! Which we all found very amusing as a group at the end of our French holiday together. Great interaction with the children. It was our first time at Belle Epoque, and it looked like it was full of locals, so book ahead. We would...
Read moreI've been coming to this restaurant for 15 years and it used to be a favourite. Not any more. Today my family and I visited and were shocked and insulted to have our meal interrupted part way through by the waiter suddenly handing me the bill, card machine in hand asking "cash or card"? I've never been asked to pay for a meal in the middle before in any country. It completely ruined the atmosphere and left us with a bad feeling. Definitely won't be recommending this...
