Love this place!
We have a few regular haunts when in the area and Le Rive Gauche is always the first that we visit, often after unpacking following a long journey. An ideal place to relax, have a light bite, a little vin, possibly meet some friends and watch the canal traffic, some expert, some not quite so.
These days, we always try to remember to book since understandably, it fills up quickly - a testament to Julien and his teams hard work.
It always delivers what we expect and hope for - good quality fare, very reasonably priced and delivered with a smile, a friendly welcome and great ambience.
All in all superb value - that’s why we keep coming back!
Very happy to recommend.
June 2022
Second day back in Homps and the ‘newly managed’ Rive Gauche was a box that needed ticking for us.
Arrived at just after 6 pm for a thirst quencher - a beer and an orange juice were ordered and arrived with a smile. We asked for a menu which soon followed but were told that food wasn’t served until 7 - a change since our last visit (Oct 2019) but not an issue.
It was also interesting to see that a couple of tables were reserved which wasn’t something that I recall having seen much of under the previous management…….
The menu is significantly slimmer than previously but again, not an issue and in fact, quite refreshing. Within the menu I saw they were offering Beef Carpaccio which was to me a welcome surprise, having had a hugely disappointing version locally the previous evening - a fairly low benchmark had been set to be honest. My wife opted for the Salade Nicoise and so we relaxed and watched the restaurant gradually fill as the clock approached ‘kick off’ hour.
Rive Gauche occupies an enviable position alongside the Canal du Midi in Homps and is absolutely perfect for relaxing and watching the sun go down as the canal activities wind down for evening.
Anyway, just before the appointed hour the serving staff arrived and kitchen activity became evident. We ordered our food and a couple more drinks and enjoyed the ambience.
There was a very lively yet relaxed and easy buzz developing as the tables filled and orders were placed. The serving staff hit the boards running and were pleasant and efficient throughout.
Our food arrived and looked very definitely good enough to eat and certainly was. The salad benefited from being just about the right quantity with a well chosen variety of tasty leaves and my Carpaccio and frites was superb - a vast improvement upon the rival ‘effort’ of the previous night and at significantly less cost.
We stayed enjoying the ambience for some while longer finishing off after a boule or two of glacé’ with a coffee. A really very enjoyable evening aided and abetted by a new young owner who, assisted by his staff, was clearly intending to offer good value in an enjoyable atmosphere which he unquestionably delivered in spades.
Indeed, we have revisited recently and this time opted for a pizza which was spot-on and accompanied by a Mojito cocktail which I’d seen receiving positive reviews. Excellent - if I’d have been wearing socks, they’d have...
Read moreA dream of a setting this is. Right next to the canal , and in this generally lovely and laid- back environment. The price is right and so is the food - pizza, seafood, all is correct. However even though this is a fairly small bistrot, the staff and owner come across as totally overwhelmed by what's going around them, hardly able to cope with tables all full. We got served drink fairly soon but after waiting for a good hour with not so much as an olive to help while away the time and watching the staff fly padt our table and with the iwner looking like he's about to have a heart attack, rushing past in such a stressed state that he can't even share a smile. To pay you go inside to the bar and here again there was a 15 min wait as the owner is the only one allowed to operate the till and he is ... well ... a bit hard to catch. Ended up feeling quite sorry for them all, it's just that people don't go out to eat in order to wait over an hour for the food and certainly not also in order to experience the stress...
Read moreA very nice family run restaurant and bar situated right by the Canal du Midi in Homps. The staff are very friendly, including the teenage sons of the owners, who were both very polite and friendly and greeted us with a 'bonsoir' as we arrived.
We didn't eat on this occasion but enjoyed the late afternoon sun sat outside enjoying a glass of red wine and a beer.
It is very popular, there were plenty of people sat, like us, enjoying a drink whilst waiting for the restaurant to open. There were quite a few tables reserved.
The restaurant menu looked good, very reasonably priced, with a good choice of pizzas.
The location is very good. It's close to the Homps port and basin on the canal, plus the camping-car aire; both within a short walk.
