Le 16 Carnot — Restaurant in Poitiers

Unfortunately, Le 16 Carnot is overpriced, overrated and not worth eating at.

My fiancé and I went to visit on a whim whilst out in Poitiers and looking for a bite to eat for dinner. We had previously heard good things about Le 16 Carnot, so we decided to go in and give it a try.

The atmosphere as you walk in is okay, but a little too pretentious for my liking. We started off with some mocktails, which were essentially just juice, before deciding to move directly the 500g ribeye (entrecôte) main to follow. None of the starters drew us in at all, but there was some popcorn to snack on at the table, which was a nice touch.

We both requested our steaks to be cooked medium rare and, when they first came out, they were absolutely shocking. Raw is the only word I could use to describe the cookery of our steaks. I am a fan of medium rare and even rare steaks, but this was just another level of blue. We both ended up sending our steaks back to be cooked further as they were inedible the way they were.

When our steaks came back, they were still incredibly raw. At that point, we were just itching to get them eaten and leave, as the experience was taking a bad turn. We both struggled through 500g of raw, under seasoned steak that was also, unfortunately, full of sinew and pretty tough to chew - the beef didn’t seem to be very high quality either. It was a really bad time.

On the upside, the sauce was okay and the fries were well seasoned, generous and fresh tasting. Our waiter was also quite nice and we were given some sweets on our way out as a thank you for visiting, which was kind.

Overall, we really didn’t enjoy our meals at Le 16 Carnot and haven’t returned since. We also actually bumped into a group of our friends eating there on our way out and a few of them also complained about their meals, which told us that this was...

Lovely restaurant in the middle of Poitiers. Not a lot I can say really except excellent food, excellent staff and can't wait to return! Our waiter was brilliant, asking if we preferred it if he spoke in English and he was more than happy to do this, while I can translate some foods, there was a couple of things I wasn't sure of. We chose the 3 courses including drinks special with both of us opting for the 16 Carnot signature dish and we were not disappointed! The moist, slow cooked belly pork was simply divine- not a word I normally use but cannot think of anything else. The deserts were equally as good, the brioche- another restaurant special and the chocolate fondant should come with warnings for deliciousness. Personnel sympathique notamment en bas (au comptoir) mais assez confuse sur la réservation ainsi que sur le service.

J'avais passé une réservation via le site à 14h, à 18h je n'avais toujours pas eu de confirmation de leur côté pour une résa à 20h, j'ai dû appeler pour m'en assurer. La dame que j'ai eu au téléphone, au demeurant sympathique n'avait pas encore regardé apparemment, mais m'a proposée de passer réservation directement au téléphone. C'est déjà ça.

Sur place, pas de menu anglais, ce serait bien qu'il y en ait un - ou au moins une petite traduction anglaise en italique en dessous de chaque plat si l'impression de menus anglais n'est pas prévue - mais la serveuse m'a tout de même proposée la traduction pour mon compagnon qui n'est pas français, cela reste très sympathique de sa part.

Le service se déroulait plutôt bien et plutôt rapide en soir de semaine, les serveurs efficaces. Mais lorsque les desserts sont arrivés (fondants au chocolat pour nous deux), j'ai découvert un morceau de plastique en plein milieu du fondant.

J'ai donc souhaité le mentionner au serveur en fin de repas, il est arrivé un peu en speed en me demandant si c'était terminé et en me demandant si boissons chaudes il y allait avoir, c'est donc là que j'ai indiqué la petite découverte, en montrant le morceau dans l'assiette, il était surpris de voir cela et à pris l'assiette très rapidement en me disant quelque chose que je n'ai pas entendu, puis est vite allé aux cuisines. Je m'attendais à un petit retour de sa part, j'ai attendu 5-10mins en me disant qu'il attendait peut-être une explication en cuisine, puis quand j'ai vu qu'il ne venait plus du tout à notre table et qu'il semblait nous fuire, j'ai abandonné.

Payer 70€ pour ce genre de service... Je veux dire, je ne crois pas avoir entendu au moins une petite excuse au nom du restaurant, tout s'est fait dans l'indifférence la plus totale, j'ai vraiment été très surprise dans le mauvais sens.

Pour finir, la cuisine était ok, mais rien d'exceptionnel.
