La Place Restaurant Cancale — Restaurant in Saint-Malo

Ordered seafood tower royal after having similar platter at a restaurant at a different place at earlier date. The tower was brought quickly (too quickly in retrospect) and smelled kind of fishy. The langoustines tails were mushy and not as sweet as usual, the shrimps didn’t taste as good as well. When I then smelled the lobster, it had an ammonia scent to it that is usually found in not fresh seafood. At this point, without eating most of seafood (including the lobster and the 2 crabs) I asked a waiter to take away the seafood tower. They took it off the bill but the whole experience was ruined and the kids were looking forward to it after having a great experience with similar seafood arrangements in the other place. When the issue was brought to the manager, he tried to turn it around and accused me of having eaten most of the platter which is false (as I only had about 10-20%). Food

Huge amount on the menu centering on seafood and regional specialities without sacrificing variety. Prices are what you expect for what you get. Incredible presentation of food at all levels. Food is well prepared and of a high quality. Very tasty. 9.5/10

Service

Very friendly staff (even spoke good English!) are attentive, welcoming and accurate. You feel like you are being looked after. Frequently offered bread, drinks and other refreshments to ease the burden of the perfectly reasonable wait time. Very well staffed. 9.5/10

Atmosphere

Relatively simple but also does the job well. Comfortable seats that are not crammed together with somewhat low ceilings accompanied by music provides for a bustling yet pleasant atmosphere. Only issue would be the nearby road however that isn't generally...

Lovely lunch with a starter of the seafood plate, one oyster, 3 shrimp, one langoustine and 4 whelks. My favorite were the pink shrimps, a lot of flavor for such a little shrimp. The wells were good but a bit chewy and very large. Once I figured out to cut it in half it was better. Especially with the mayonnaise. The mussels were a delight - small, flavorful and cooked perfectly. The special cake was good with plums in the cake and the caramel sauce. Our waitress was a delight. After we told her we were trying French she let us try instead of going immediately to English. We...
