I'm not here reviewing 400+ restaurants (so far) because I'm easily lost for words. The last 4 places I've reviewed in this region all received 4 or 5, which was above their 3.9 averages. So, hopes were high for this 4.8* beauty, promising great tradional local meals. I am, uncharacteristically lost for words. The €10 ratatouille with goats cheese and crumble was literally that. I guess I shouldn't complain. It was a single kitchen spoonfull: the crumble almost as innocuous as the goats cheese...which had all the character of a fully bandaged head. The wine and bread kept our interest for the mains. The 6 small sardines were 6 small sardines €21. Ungutted may be tradional, and this was the first overcooked fish I've had in 28 seafood meals in this country I love. Alongside this was a salad, who's greatest claim to recognition as culinary were a few pieces of somewhat julienne celeriac. The polenta (sorry, apparently chick pea flour) chips too had met a dry expiration (as chick pea flour easily does), not saved by the sprinkling of tomato concassé (no, thats not pesto rosso which would be sundried tomatoes, fresh basil, garlic, nuts, and parmesan). The swordfish fared better, but suffered from the identical accompaniment. Raw swordfish and cooked sardines deserve individual treatment, especially on a menu of 4 mains. Yes, kitchens in summer is hot...been there..we suffer for our art. The host (no, not the waitress, she was great. The host.) was as wound up as a 16 year old facing his first driving test, but, the service was fine though. The setting is lovely, and the village a dream. But the kitchen needs a strong hand, and classic French culinary skills. We were asked, and asked, and asked again (within her 25 second appearance as we paid) by our hostess (only time we met her. Customers confide in those they've met over the course of the meal...perhaps had she introduced herself and explained that shed noticed we were less than happy, we would have told her...) if we enjoyed the meal. Why wouldn't we give this feedback then? Simple (thanks for asking 😉). In my experience, feedback to a stressed out host in the middle of service never goes well. Our job as customers is not to educate the restaurateur. As a former restaurateur, I get the frustration of posthumous criticism. But, that's the format here. Restaurants do not have to list here (reviewers cant review a restaurant that de lists themselves). If they choose to remain listed, they have to be open to all...
