Café & Konditorei Schnibbe — Restaurant in Bad Lauterberg im Harz

Probably one of the rudest experiences I’ve had in a cafe. I walked in to buy a small gift (a pre-packaged bag of biscuits) and politely asked if I could pay by card. The staff member said yes, but when I tried to pay with Apple Pay, the machine wouldn’t process it.

I explained that I didn’t have a physical card or cash on me, and was about to put the item back when he launched into a sarcastic rant: comparing me to someone walking into a car dealership without money - and then abruptly took the biscuits and placed them behind the counter, as if I might try to steal them despite me offering to put them back. I stayed calm and polite but left feeling genuinely shocked.

Minutes later, my Apple Pay worked perfectly in two other nearby shops/cafés enabling me to get the same biscuits, while confirming that his machine was clearly slightly outdated, only accepting physical cards.

Times have changed, and it’s no excuse to treat people rudely just because you don’t trust modern technology. Especially people who didn’t consume anything and planned on coming back with a physical card or cash - a bit of courtesy would have...

Surprisingly good! Modest on the outside, but inside is beautiful, cozy, and full of goodies. So many types of cake, slices, chocolates and so far one of the best coffees I've had in Germany. They absolutely take pride in their product and care about their customer experience, served by Herr Schnibbe himself, who was extremely friendly, and quite entertaining honestly. Letzten Samstag durch einen meiner Lieblingsorte im Harz und ein Café gesucht. Hier wurden wir fündig und konnten im Innenbereich einen Platz ergattern. Es ist eine typische Kaffeestube und ich habe das Durchschnittsalter doch etwas gesenkt. Wir waren zu fünft und haben uns vorne ein Stück Torte ausgesucht und dann eine Nummer für unseren Tisch bekommen. Wieder am Platz wurde dieser mitgenommen und unsere Getränkewünsche wurden notiert. Das Stück war zügig da, leider kam meine weiße Schokolade recht spät. Waren fast alle fertig da kam sie erst. Ich hatte ein Stück mit einem Boden aus Dinkel, darauf waren Heidelbeeren und Sahne und oben drauf ordentlich Eierlikör. Der Spaß hat drei Euro gekostet was ich sehr human empfand. Die Toilette wurde auch aufgesucht war sehr sauber, allerdings könnte es für Dicke schwierig werden. Die Eingangstür ist sehr schmal. Zum Glück bin ich schlank... An unserem Tisch wurde auch ein Pott Kaffee bestellt dieser war recht teuer mit 4,40 €. Mein Gesamteindruck war positiv, denn geschmacklich war die Torte sehr lecker. Kaffee...
