Since many years I've heard Zola is one of the best pizzas in Berlin. I was delighted to finally get a chance to try it, especially at the scenic location on the river. The atmosphere is fantastic, the weather was as well. Unfortunately some intrinsic and extrinsic factors made for a below average experience.
Food: Zola makes napoli style Pizza. So big, puffy crusts, with some char, a bit of sauce, and light toppings.
I would say that pizza I had stretches this to the extreme. There was piles of dough, very very scant toppings, not enough sauce, and in some places way too much char. We ordered Spianata (best one), Buffalina, and the namesake Zola + 2 softdrinks and a cocktail for 51 EUR.
Spianata was great as expected. Still could use a half laddle more sauce.
Buffalina was supposed to have buffala mozzarella, but the mozz was nothing special. The pizza was dry, and overly bitter from the basil and char. Cherry tomatoes were flavorless.
The namesake Zola was also a sad affair. The crust was nearly half of the pizza and the cheese was scant, while pears were crunchy. I was expecting a sort of Frenchy, dessert pizza. I got bread with bread.
These are all intrinsic problems. I don't know if they ran out of ingredients so they were stretching them, or what. But the cocktail was even weak.
The extrinsic was that we arrived at 6:15 and were given a 45 min waiting time. For the disappointing pizza, the wait wasn't worth it. Especially since we had to walk from the Ferry. It's a bit of a stretch to get there in general.
All these things can be improved. Hopefully this location can fix up its act. Otherwise it will remain a overhyped pizza with a...
Read moreHave generally enjoyed Zola at Funkhaus - in a great location, and can be a great place to end a bike ride at. Pizzas can take some time especially on a nice day, but it’s a pleasant place to wait. Were it not for this, my rating after an experience today would be much lower….
I ordered the Vegetariana (Vegan Option) and a beer. While eating the second-to-last slice, I noticed a strong fish taste, and noticed there was 2 pieces of Anchovy on the pizza.
Showing this to the wait staff, they were mildly apologetic, letting me know that ‘it can happen’. They offered to make me another pizza, and while I can be a glutton, that would be a bit too much. In the meantime the kitchen was asking what was going on, and the chef was even more dismissive, again telling me that ‘well, it happens’.
Although the waiter didn’t offer to refund the pizza, she did eventually offer another beer for free, which is better than nothing. But if your system runs in a way where vegan options having fish on them isn’t unusual, then you’ve got some big problems...

We ordered yesterday (6.03.) at 19:18. After 55 minutes of waiting we went to the counter to check if everything was ok (a friend who just ordered few minutes later received her pizza at 19:35). When we kindly asked, the first waitress answered in an angry way “one hour of waiting is what to expect when you come here” and the second waitress, equally pissed, added “yeah that’s the game!”. 20:25, our order was ready for pick up, one pizza was missing, a quick and annoyed “ja sorry die Kollegin hat die vierte Pizza auf dem Beleg gestrichen, weiß nicht warum“. That’s it. My friend got her pizza at 20:40. A lady before us came back to the counter with her pizza and complained about something, all that she got was a “es ist so!” - the lady was definitely as pleased by the quality of the service as we were.
I truly have understanding for chaotic evenings in a restaurant (and everybody should) and I don’t mind waiting, but whatever was going on, that’s definitely not a way to...
