Winzerkeller Schloss Philippsburg — Restaurant in Loreley

Wienerschnitzel everywhere! But not here 🙂

We took a driving tour today to explore the castles along the east side of the Rhine River. We started west of Wiesbaden and finished the day at the base of the Marksburg Castle.

We were getting hungry and started looking for restaurants. We actually stopped at a couple that primarily served Wienerschnitzel, which is just ok. We just wanted something different tonight.

The menu here is exactly what we were looking for. Several choices not typically found in the local restaurants.

Tonight I had the yellow Curry dish with chicken breast, garden veggies, and rice. The veggies were fresh, just right, tender crisp. My spouse had the risotto which was also very good.

The desserts sounded intriguing and we decided to splurge. The presentation was excellent and everything tasted great! Service excellent, and the ambiance charming, clean, and historical. Complimentary gummy bears were a nice touch 🙂

We showed up with our 2 year old son in our hiking clothes and were worried that we might feel out of place. We need not have worried, however, as the staff were extremely friendly and made all of us, including our son, feel welcome. The food itself was also very well prepared and I appreciated the fresh modern takes on several German classics paired with some nice local wines. Wir waren am frühen Abend in diesem wirklich wunderschönen Winzerkeller essen, wurden herzlich begrüßt und von nettem Personal sehr zuvorkommend bedient. Als Gruß aus der Küche kam Brot mit leckerem Zwiebel-Chutney auf den Tisch. Frankfurter Grüne Soße mit Tafelspitz und Kartoffeln sollte es für mich sein, ein Zwiebelschmorbraten für meinen Mann. Letzterer war auch zart und lecker mit guter Soße. Die Beilagen - zwei fertige Plätzchen von Kartoffelgratin und ein Mischgemüse aus der Tiefkühltruhe - so mittelmäßig. Von meinem Tafelspitz war ich enttäuscht: Das Fleisch bestand aus Fetzen, die offenbar, ebenso wie die Salzkartoffeln vom Vortrag in der Mikrowelle erhitzt wurden. Für mich ein absolutes Nogo. Die grüne Soße war lecker, kam aber direkt aus dem Kühlschrank auf den Tisch. Sehr, sehr schade. Die Rezensionen auf dieser Plattform hatten so viel Gutes versprochen, können von uns aber nur bedingt nachvollzogen werden. Auf die aufgewärmten Kartoffeln und das trockene Fleisch angesprochen, räumte der Kellner ein, dass das Essen tatsächlich nur in die Mikrowelle geschoben wird. Man arbeite schließlich auf gerade einmal vier Quadratmetern. Auf der Rechnung hat er freundlicherweise von sich aus das Glas Rotwein gestrichen. Das fand ich sehr kulant, denn Goethes Leibgericht stand mit immerhin 19 Euro...
