Gasthaus und Pension "Zum Pappenheimer" — Restaurant in Saalfeld/Saale

A couple of years after my original review, i have to change it. This was, in fact, our go to place in Saalfeld for a while, whenever we made the hour long trip. Unfortunately, last night was our last time eating here. The food is good, but nothing you can't get 100 other places - we went for the friendly service and the atmosphere. Without that there is no point. I made a reservation almost two weeks before hand for a particular table (it's tucked away in a nook on the stairs, it is quieter and special), it was for a birthday dinner... which is why i called extra early and made sure to secure this particular table. When we arrived - at 6 when they open - they said they were giving away that table to a party of 3, and since we were 2 they moved us to a smaller table. Actually, one very loud and cramped next to the coat rack, so we were constantly bumped by people clamoring in and out of their jackets. When i reminded them I'd specially reserved the other table, they were very rude. It was astonishing. It seems that the extra few dollars they earned giving away that table to seat one more person, regardless of a standing reservation, was worth losing customers. To be honest, a very disappointing experience. Without the friendly service and groovy atmosphere this place loses its spark, and has lost some customers. There are many other delicious and friendlier places to choose from in Saalfeld.

This was our third time staying at the Pappenheimer. We always receive a warm welcome. The room was very comfortable and there is a great atmosphere in the bar/restaurant. The breakfast is really excellent. There is an extensive menu and all the food is great. Service is friendly and very efficient. The only downside is the restricted parking in the street during the week. Twice we have travelled by car but this time it was easier travelling by train. The hotel is ideally situated in a quiet street next to the town centre. I'm sure we'll be staying...
