This is one of five restaurants on this pier. All are excellent with fresh fish brought in daily and fantastic fresh vegetables from the gardens at the back of the restaurant. If you have hired a speed boat you can dock in the harbour and the waiters will come out and help you moor. This is not a particularly easy task if you are not used to it. Just make sure your throw out your aft anchor well before getting to the concrete peer and be ready to throw your fore anchor to the waiter! We were entertained while we ate watching people attempt this, some clearly had not done it before! If you are travelling by car, there is a bay to the side of the road above the restaurant where you can park. If this is full you can continue North past the small alley to the restaurants and you should be able to find a space to pull over to the left of the road. Ask the waiter/waitress to show you the fresh fish, this is how we decided which of the restaurants along this pier to eat at. We had a fish called a Sheepsheard? - it was delicious. Our kids who are vegetarian had excellent fired courgette balls with yogurt dipping sauce. A local guy regularly comes to play his violin and sing traditional rural greek songs. This provides an interesting backdrop to accompany the gentle swishing of waves...
Read moreThis place is a must go! I know that most people are directed to Steni Vala for fresh fish/seafood/lobster, but Kalamakia is the real gem of Alonissos. We chose to eat in Maina (and not in any other of the 3 restaurants) as my family mentioned that it is the best. I am blown away by the big garden behind the restaurant with fresh veg (all the veg is their production/ when you park there is a big sign to where their garden is) and their boat parked right in front of the taverna. They have a big fridge with all the fresh fish fished on the day. Big variety, but we decided to go for the lobster. By far the best lobster pasta we've had on the island (we've been coming for years), the most meety, juice lobster! We accompanied our food with their home grown greens (vlita) and it didn't disappoint. Looking forward to coming back and enjoy other things on the menu! I cannot reccommend enough this family owned taverna, for its outstanding food, friendly service,...
Read moreUnfortunately, although this restaurant is on a cute harbour and the staff seem nice, the food is a very low standard. I usually love typical taverna cooking but this food was absolutely awful.
The pastisio was the worst one I’ve ever had, with a solid topping that tasted like it was made from the box, and a meat sauce that was dry and had absolutely no flavour. The sardines were also really dry and overcooked. The quality of the ingredients was very low overall.
Even though the setting is quite nice, and the service is good, I do not understand how it has a high rating when they are serving food like this. There does seem to be an emerging problem in Greece that lots of seemingly highly rated restaurants have huge numbers of 5 star reviews and yet seem to be tourist traps with really bad food.
I would...
