We were here 2 days. The first day we had the Tzatziki, the spicy Feta from the oven and the fried courgette balls (as you see on the picture) together with a draft beer and a milkshake.
The guy who took our order was sympathetic but had dirty fingernails. First we were a bit afraid but this was not an issue because another guy brought us the things we ordered. The quality of the food was excellent and absolutely tasty.
Why only 3 Stars? Because of the second day! Next day we went there again and wanted to try cakes. As special they offered a pear cheesecake. When we arrived all tables were dirty and not yet cleaned from the customers before. We were at the upper terrace.
A unmotivated girl came, cleared the dishes and cleaned the table. After 5 min the guy who took the order came we told him what we wanted. The drinks came after a few minutes but no cake. I also didn't had the chance to remember a waiter for the cake because there was no waiter seen for the next 45 min! Even the guests behind wanted to pay but nobody from the service was seen.
We went down from the terrace and I saw the waiters sitting or smoking. I told them to pay and and the pear cheesecake was on their receipt. I told them that I didn't received the cake so I only paid the drinks and heared an unmotivated sorry from the girl.
Service on a very low level. I can bring my money somewhere else, if they don't need it. We were disappointed and will not come back. And this for a nearly 5,-...
Read moreThis was our favorite dining place on the whole island. Even if it was a very hot day the restaurant's terrace provide shade and allowed us to cool down. There we also had large fans operating that made us feel very comfortable. The family-run restaurant served us delicious food plus free dessert. The service was impeccable, we arrived at the restaurant on a very hot day and as soon as we were seated we have been served cold water with ice. We had starters and mains and also took spinach pie to go. For starters, we had the courgettes balls and the dips/ pitta bread which we loved. For the mains, we had a pork stew which was the day special, and stuffer peppers and tomatoes. The day specials were very nice and we would recommend them. In the end, we have been offered Greek yogurt with jam and ice cream for dessert. Even if the restaurant was full, we have been served in good time. The restaurant is located in a small village near the Castle of Saint George and even if there are other restaurants in the area the Kastro Cafe is characterized by its character with a Traditional Greek feel. The prices are very affordable and we are very happy that we discovered this little gem in the middle of the island. We would recommend it and if we will go back to Kefalonia we would...
Read moreA visit to Kastro never disappoints. From the iced water you receive as soon as you arrive to the satisfied appetite you leave with.
Food is always a big part of our visit to Kefalonia and Kastro has again prooved to be the highlight. The all day breakfast (not to be confused with a British fry up) was a hit of amazing flavours. The caugette balls, perfect. Giant beans are always a filling treat. Spicy baked feta added some heat to our meal. But my favourite had to be the spinach pie, great big slice of flavour, loved it.
We have visited many times over the years, pre-kids, one kid and this year with two kids in tow. Spiros and Nicki were so welcoming and made a big fuss of our son on this, his return visit.
Kastro has received many positive reviews in many publications and they are well deserved.
Genuinely, if you want the most authentic, flavoursome Kefalonian food, twinned with real Greek hospitality that welcomes everyone with open arms, then this is the...
