Avoid this place – total disappointment.

The owner is rude and arrogant – a real brute. During dinner, he served us decent wine and claimed it was his homemade product. The next day, when we asked to buy a bottle, he shamelessly poured the wine straight from a supermarket box – the cheapest, sour swill imaginable – right in front of us. Still charged €10 for 1.5 liters of that trash.

The calamari? Fake. Just small, low-grade substitutes pretending to be the real thing. And although the food was somewhat okay, the place is empty in the evenings – unlike other taverns nearby that are full or even require reservations. That alone says a lot.

This is a classic case of “penny wise, pound foolish.” Greedy and short-sighted.

To make matters worse, the owner later harassed my friend – who also bought the wine – with passive-aggressive remarks just because I dared to speak the truth.

We went in Zygos Taverna 3 times while we were on our holiday. First 2 times we were very satisfied - with food, ambiance, everything was very good, especially rottaserie lamb. So, we went the 3rd time, this Sunday for another what we thought it will be nice dinner, and they dissapointed so much. We ordered 3 rottaserie lamb and 1 gyros pita, and we got leftovers from yesterday. Lamb portions were very small compaired to one that we ate the night before. It was 3 small, very dried old pieces with large piece of bones, potatoes were also from yesterday. Everything was just served that was from yesterday. Our order was taken from some young waither, and we were the first and only customer that evening. We were asked from another waither is it everything ok, but we didnt want to argue there. As a Greek and a true foodie, I have to say—Zygos Taverna in Istron absolutely won me over!

This is real Cretan cooking, the kind that reminds you of your yiayia's kitchen. I tried the "Grandmother's Eggplant" and the Calamari & Shrimp mix—both were bursting with flavor, cooked the traditional way, and served with love. The eggplant was rich and comforting, while the seafood mix was fresh and perfectly grilled.

To top it all off, they surprised us with a homemade dessert on the house, and it was fantastic. Little touches like this make all the difference.
