We don't claim to be US west coast foodies, but we've probably been accused behind our backs. I say this to then say we both had one of the best meals we've had in our entire lives here (and we're old, and have enjoyed a fairly wide range of cuisines over the years). This was excellent both because of the quality of our dishes, and because of their locavore uniqueness. After a light, grazing day we indulged in folded smoked pork saganaki pitas as an app, herself rhapsodized about the pork in orange and olives with tiny local pasta pieces (the home chef already finding recipes for this!). I enjoyed a smoked pork penne dish that was outstanding (yes, this was an all-pork indulgence, a rarity for us). We also enjoyed a Kechris retsina new to us, and our host shared a taste of the Assyrtiko white that serves as its basis. All of this on the plaka in kentro Areopoli, which itself is very charming with kids and families out enjoying the evening together. If you visit Areopoli,...
Read moreThe restaurant asked if I would explain my poor rating, so they could improve the food and service. All of my rating are fair and not mean spirited. I was thinking of two choices for my dinner. When I mentioned one, the waiter said I have to stick with that choice. It was a pork dish too tough to eat. My wife ordered the special of the day, meat pies. The pies were not filled as they should have been. Next the wine. We are from California and know wine. We preferred red wine with our meal, but our server insisted that barrel wine was out of season. He brought to the table a glass of the out of season red wine . By the smell, you could tell it wasn't drinkable. By the way, you could get a could bottle of Peloponnese red at the grocery store for 10 euro. At the end of our meal, I think our waiter may have realized they didn't meet our expectations. So, a fair, and non...

A few minutes later, another young man a few years older, came to our table and said we had to leave. He said “this is a restaurant!!!, we don’t serve coffee, there are no restaurants that serve coffee!!!”
I asked to make sure I understood what he said “there are “no” restaurants that serve coffee around here?” And he replied very condescendingly “Not in Greece”.
I don’t understand why we were treated poorly by this young gentleman. He acted as though we insulted him. My Great Grandfather is from Skala and I have family from Vamvaka and Stefania. I’ve been to Greece several times in the past twenty years and that was terrible...
