I cannot recommend this place highly enough. The lady who runs the restaurant is an absolute character, and she makes some of the best food I have eaten in Crete. We stumbled upon this restaurant last year while holidaying in Crete, and, having returned to holiday in Crete again, we drove 1.5 hours just to eat her DELICIOUS food again!! My family is all vegetarian, and we had TONS brought. The way this wonderfully whacky woman works is that she will simply ask if you're vegetarian or not, and then will start bringing over plates and plates of food. No menus, just simply whatever she has prepared that day. Trust me, whatever she has made, it will be AMAZING. We were brought even more food than we could eat, and the five of us ate for €60 total! We asked to take away our leftovers, and not only did she add to the dishes that we had left over, but even put in a new dish to take away with us! You are served very quickly, and you will undoubtedly have a brilliant experience eating here. The owner herself is an absolute legend, and the food simply can't be beaten. As a lifelong vegetarian, I can safely say that her food was the best vegetarian food out of anywhere we have tried, and had by far the biggest range of options. Again, I cannot recommend a trip...
Read moreAn astounding gem of a restaurant in Zaros. Vegera showcases home cooking and Mrs Vivi and her smiling cooks conjure up Greek goodies you'd be served if visiting a Greek household. Greek tavern staples like moussaka and stuffed tomatoes do make an appearance, but they are satellite dishes around whatever Mrs Vivi has cooked that day. There is no menu, just turn up and see what she serves you. I don't know how she does it but she comes up with combinations of everyday ingredients you'd never think of, adding a delectable spin to her dishes. While her restaurant isn't wheelchair accessible, with some wrangling we were able to get my son comfortably seated. The following day, we passed by in the morning to request a salt free meal for my son that evening, which she delivered with such gusto that the rest of us were fighting over who gets to finish the delicious salt free beef patties and oven potatoes! Don't skip this place, you'll be thinking about the food for...
Read moreOne of the best memories of my Cretan holiday. If you are looking for a place where you can feel at home, like having dinner at your grandmother's, then Vegera is the place. And just like when you go to your grandmother's, you don't choose the menu, you eat what's there, because you already know it's going to be great. That's how it is here: you sit down and a series of simply and traditionally made Greek dishes start arriving, such as tzatziki, aubergines in oil, bean soup, moussaka, tomato salad, sausages with potatoes, baked chicken, stuffed courgette, dessert, melon, Greek coffee, red wine, sparkling water and cinnamon liqueur, and maybe I have forgotten something. And at the end, almost incredulously, I find myself with a bill for 15 Euros!!! Not only if you pass through Crete, but if you even come there on holiday, find the time and the way to come to...
