Really poor restaurant overall. I was really disappointed as a whole for our lunch time visit. I come to Crete a lot, Makry Gialos especially as I have a family apartment here. I haven’t had a bad experience with restaurants here but George’s / Tzortzs has really taken the biscuit.
The setting Here at George’s is lovely however the food and service was abysmal. I ordered a prawn saganaki and there had obviously been a miscommunication as a deep fried cheese ended up in front of me. I had explained that’s not what I had ordered and the woman replied with “shame”. I proceeded to try it but it wasn’t very good and I had to order something else as I couldn’t eat it and was hungry.
My dish had arrived 10-15 mins before my partners omlet which when it arrived it was awful, he rated it a solid 1 out of 10. You have to question how good a kitchen is when they struggle to make a decent omelet.
As an additional order I had asked for the spinach pies, these came out and are usually one of my favourite Greek delicacies But this restaurants version had served me a pie which had a frozen centre. After informing the waiter, her took them away with no sign of an apology or a thought process to correct the error.
After waiting for 10 mins with no follow up of what was going on I went and asked for the bill where I was responded to with a snappy tone and an “I’m to busy to deal with you now, wait”
We had chosen to eat there as it was close to the beach we were spending the day on. We had been informed a 1 o’clock when we arrived that if we ate lunch there that we could use the sun beds and umbrella for free as we were paying customers. After lunch we set up shop on the beds and got comfortable. After 5 mins a boy can over demanding 6€ from us very loudly in front of people. We explained what we had been told and he went off to come back again telling us the boss said “we pay or we go away”. We asked for the boss who was the man who told us that eating lunch resulted in free sun beds to come and speak to us to sort it out. No one came to see us to tell us to leave or apologise for the confusion.
I can’t express how awful this experience was, avoid at all costs as there are many more spots for lunch and relaxing that don’t include bad food and poor and...
Read moreGeorge’s Taverna is hands down my favorite place to eat in the area. It is a family-owned taverna where the son manages the front of house and the mother is in charge of the kitchen. This personal touch is felt in everything they do. The food is consistently good, but what really sets this place apart is the warm, genuine hospitality.
Unlike many of the restaurants in the center of town, George’s Taverna makes you feel seen. If you are dining alone, the staff are friendly and happy to chat, making sure you feel welcome and included. It is the kind of place where you don’t just eat, but feel part of the atmosphere.
I have worked my way through almost the entire menu, and my favorites so far are the moussaka, the grilled octopus, and the swordfish. Each dish is prepared with care and served with pride. The house wine is surprisingly good, and the house olive oil is excellent.
If I had to mention something slightly negative, it would be that the portions are quite generous.q This is normally a good thing, but it can be a challenge to finish them if you are eating alone.
An added bonus is that sunbeds are free for guests using the taverna. Highly...
Read moreOn the way to Ierapetra we passed George's Restaurant to have something to eat an most important a coffee. George told us, that he runs a restaurant and so he doesn't have coffee. I politely told him, that it's also in greece unusual for a restaurant not to serve greek coffe (I was at least 12 times in Greece and 10 times in Crete).
Hearing this, George got very angry and loud. He told us to leave his restaurant. I think he even tried to threaten me physiacally. I'm a strong guy and told him, that I will always say my opinion. We had some arguing in front of his restaurant and the other guests. I'm wondering the this wasn't embarrassing for him.
Maybe the food is okay, but don't say anything George doesn't want to here. He can get...
