Varkoules — Restaurant in Municipality of Nea Ionia

It is a traditional fish/seafood taverna in an area which is not often visited for its restaurants and night out. It is very well respected by those who love this type of cuisine and its reputation is excellent. We had lunch on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The service was good although it was peak hour. The food tasted great and I would certainly visit again soon. The orzo with shrimps is considered a signature plate while the variety of fresh fish they have is very large and it is worth asking what exists off the menu.

Visited again. Had a nice plate of greens (stamnagathi) which was super tasty. Fava with calamari and pesto. fresh octopus in vinegar. Sardines and tarama. All as expected were great choices, light and yet filling our appetite.

The quality of the dishes was below moderate and the prices were extravagant. There was an uncomfortable smell inside the tavern that made things worse. Everything we ordered arrived at the same time which was not what we wanted or accepted. If you order a starter you want to taste it as a starter and not as a main dish. The service was fast though. Extremely overrated prices for a local tavern located within blocks of flats, in a narrow street among parked vehicles, with no view at all. Quality of dishes did not meet our expectations, either - at least for most of them. Service was adequate, but it is annoying bringing all dishes at once, especially when most of them are eaten hot.
