A great family-run restaurant, or rather taverna. We found the Theritas some six years ago as it was on the way to the beach from our first ever rental in Acharavi, and we've been coming back ever since. When you go there, you'll be greeted by Jimmy and his dad Harry, who will most likely speak your language as he's been all over the world and has many tales to tell. Jimmy knows his menu inside out and we found that trusting his judgement when ordering our food was always on point. In the kitchen, Kostas and his lovely mother Olga are hard at work, and you can go give them a quick hi as there is a direct view into their workspace from inside the restaurant. But you'll most likely be seated outside since Greek weather is well, Greek weather. The more you go, the more you'll feel like meeting old friends rather than just buying food, and it always feels natural. If you have kids or special requirements, you will find a team prepared to go above and beyond to share their passion for their island's cuisine. I'm French (on top of a Brit) and we are known to be picky with what we eat, and I've never had to complain at the Theritas.
They need your support in these trying times, and the kitchen staff is currently working in the heat with their masks, a tough job! Enjoy your Ouzo shot after a great meal, and have a great stay in Acharavi, a quaint new town less pittoresque than some of the tourist destinations but still our favourite as it feels real, with...
Read moreFood: Simple traditional Greek food, with a few international dishes such as Spaghetti Bolognese, and German bratwurst. Basic, no frills, with chips being the goto plate filler (I think we had three separate portions during our meal). Food itself was ok, but honestly I can't say it was anything special. Considering this restaurants selling point is authentic home cooked Greek food, I was hoping for more.
Service: Restaurant owner eagerly greeted us and seated us quickly. He was also very eager for us to choose our options quickly, as he was expecting a surge in customers (I've been past this restaurant many times and never seen it at capacity). It started to rain and I asked if we could move under cover, only to be told there were other "priority" customers, considering we're the ones who had just ordered the best part of £100 of food, I would have liked to think that we ranked higher on this list than customers yet to be seated.
Atmosphere: Just off the beaten track, with a very traditional feel, and relaxed quiet ambience. It's definitely rustic, and sometimes actually rusty. (We spent the whole meal staring at a rusty baby chair that god forbid anyone put an actual child in)
Do go if you're after basic, traditional fare in a quiet setting. Don't go if you're expecting this to be cheaper and tastier than any other of the other Greek restaurants...
Read moreWe had an unforgettable experience here! From the very start, we were welcomed with warm hospitality and treated to freshly baked bread, served with local olive oil and olives – absolutely delicious. The grilled fish was the best I’ve ever eaten, caught fresh that very morning, and served with perfect handmade cut chips and a refreshing zucchini and cucumber salad. The local wine complemented everything beautifully.
Dessert was a real highlight – portokalopita with ice cream – one of the best I’ve ever had. The family who run this place pour their heart into everything, and the owner himself is amazing: so thoughtful, kind, and eager to make recommendations. They even surprised us with free shots, which made the evening feel extra special.
A real, authentic experience from start to finish. I loved every moment and will definitely be...
