Was really looking forward to coming to this restaraunt after finding it on a YT vlogger’s video and seeing all the amazing reviews here. We drove from Falassarna and booked a dinner reservation for 6 people. My friend and I shared the antikristo lamb (1kg). It was the tiniest amount of meat I had ever seen in one portion, 80% of it was bones and fat. Maybe we were unlucky because our other 2 friends had the smaller lamb portions and actually enjoyed their meals. For the two of us it was really inexplicable. I actually feel a bit sick in the stomach 2 hours later. French fries were served 30min before the main course which meant they were completely cold and soft. The two ladies working there were really nice but forgot to bring a drink, were slow even though the restaurant was almost empty when we arrived and weren’t really equipped to either suggest stuff or professional enough to tell us that we would be having 1kg of fat and bones. Otherwise we would have understood and ordered something different. The Lappa salad was so so sweet it was impossible for the two of us to finish the whole plate. Ambient is pretty nice, traditional, location is beautiful, it was easy to find parking next to...
Read moreThis is proper Cretan hospitality in one of the most beautiful villages in Rethymno! A place where you may have delicious traditional Cretan dishes served by wonderful smiling people! The quality of raw materials is superb! Total value for money! We had ntakos with one of the best mizithra cheese ever, mousaka, lamb with lemon sauce which was absolutely amazing, delicious Cretan cheese pies and antikristo, which is a traditional technique of cooking on Crete. A young lamb is cut into four pieces, salted, then placed on big skewers that are arranged around the fire in a circular formation. This process lets the meat cook in its own fat and salt with the heat coming from the flames instead of coals. The name antikristo means across the fire. The meat is slowly cooked, sometimes up to 6 hours. This is not to be missed and this tavern is the right place to go to have it. We will definitely visit this place again soon! Thank you so much for...
Read moreThe best restaurant I have ever been to in my LIFE. And the crazy part was that we went there by accident.
We were meant to go down to the restaurant near the springs however it was closed so we decided to leave and go back to Rethymno, until I saw this tavern with plenty of good reviews and decided to give it a go.
Let’s just say it was SO GOOD we returned within 15 hours to eat again.
The food was probably the best I’ve ever had in my life (I was eating and saying “ok this is what they mean by Crete had incredible food). Everything was incredibly fresh and tasty.
Ntina the owner made us feel like home and was sooo hospitable.
We went back the next day to try the traditional Cretan dish - the Antikristo. My husband and I don’t eat lamb but we are still talking about the taste of this lamb.
Thank you - you truly made our Crete experience and this is what we will speak about when people ask us...
