Read moreThis is my second year visiting Taverna Kastro, we had a wonderful meal here last year whilst visiting the waterfalls, but this year we came back for the Taverna.
Taverna Kastro is a little higher up from where you park, a couple of minutes walk up steps past the other tavernas. I am a very large lady and tire easily, but this effort is nothing compared to the experience once you’re there. The seating area is shady and cool, with the sound of cicadas and crickets all around like a chorus. The view over the valley is beautiful and so relaxing, I’m not sure my photos do it justice. As if that wasn’t enough, the food is fantastic - I believe it’s the owner waiting tables but she also prepared some of the starters, she’s multi-lingual and multi-talented! We had 1KG antikristo lamb, tzatziki, Mizithra (both homemade), courgette balls and fried potatoes. The portions are perfect and the food was very fresh and tasty. I love Greek food and have had many great meals on this trip, but this was definitely the best. Even places where they claim antikristo lamb is their specialty don’t compare to the lamb we ate here.
The lady who waited on us was warm and genuine, she has so much to do but still took the time to talk to us which I remember from last year too. I hope to visit Crete again next year, and if I do I will definitely be back to...
Read moreWe went to Agiropoulos for a drive. We discovered this restaurant built on the side of a hill with the most delectable food. It's a bit of a climb just above the church and cave. Just follow the Kastro signs.
It's ever so tasty, made from fresh local ingredients. Local garden greens and vegetables, honey from local family owned bee hives, and extra virgin cold pressed olive oil from their groves.
We ordered kaltsounia stuffed with fresh cheese and drizzled in honey, pita filled with local greens, and dolmadaki.
To my surprise, the dolmadakia were made in zucchini flowers instead of the other tradition of rice stuffed grape leaves. The rice was soft, and aromatic herbs teased my pallet.
Every bite brought new joy to my mouth. Simply, it is one of the best culinary home cooking I have ever experienced!
I hope I can squeeze in another visit to the waters of Argiroupolis before...
