We visited Hygge in Ano Syros last weekend around sunset time for dinner.
The location was picturesque, with views from the settlement of Ano Syros and Hermoupolis tempting us to take photos from time to time.
We were politel greeted by the restaurant team members and seated in a nicely located table, overlooking the stunning view.
We decided to focus on fish and seafood and ordered the seabream carpaccio with a citrus dressing, hibiscus and mustard, a really refreshing start. We continued with fresh green beans with a mint dressing, a slight contrasting and mouth cleansing choice.
The concept encouraged sharing of the course, so we decided to order three warm dishes to get a better impression of the restaurant culinary concept. The first dish was the mussels with aromatic herbs, malagousia wine and butter. The second was the first true highlight of our evening, fresh pasta with sea urchin, followed by the dogtooth grouper with cabbage.
The wine list of the restaurant is quite extensive and offers options mainly from the greek vineyard, including some local wines. We opted for the 2022 Hatzidakis Assyrtiko PDO Santorini, a really matching wine pairing.
We finished out dinner the the Hygge interpretation of a mille feuille which sealed our dinner, where food, wine, views and nice people all contributed an overall excellent experience.
All in all the restaurant was our best dinner experience in Syros, and we will...
Read moreGreat ideas, not so great execution. We heard from multiple people that Hygge is the best restaurant on the island and that we must try it. The hike to Ano Syros from Ermoupoli is not easy, so perhaps our expectations were a bit high. However, the food and service was a bit disappointing. Sure, the view is beautiful, but only for those facing towards the water, the seating is limited. The food was all either under seasoned or over salted, or just didn’t make sense at all. The servers could not answer basic questions like what the sauce was under the fish (which turned out to be a plum skin sauce, which was warm and far too sweet to be paired with fish). They did not change plates between courses, so all of our starters, fish course, and meat course were eaten off the same plate. The servers popped a bottle of champagne at a table next to us and at least a glass worth of it spilled out in foam, they didn’t replace that table’s bottle with a new one as we would have expected. There are much better and more authentic places...
Read moreAfter all the hype and location advantage this restaurant had, I was thoroughly disappointed. When the best part of the meal was the sourdough bread and green beans, that is a problem. The main i had was the fried chicken. This was bang average. The fry on the chicken was good, but it was dry when you didnt have some of the sauce. The coleslaw was well below par, needed more mayo or vinegar or something to spice it up. My partner had the fish tacos which also were okay, the fish was well cooked but were lacking something to bring the flavors together. The dessert milfaue was good. The service could be better, it was full when we arrived and instead of offering a solution of any kind the wait just told me what i could already see, that they were full. He also ordered the incorrect main for me initially and so my partner and I did not eat together as my chicken arrived later. Overall not worth the hype. Would not go again. The...
