I'm going to have to assume that we were just really, really, really unlucky as others seem to have had a decent time. In fact, the pretty simplistic meal the group sitting next to us seemed to have been served (please - smoking is bad enough, but at least wait until other members of your party have finished eating and for the love of God, bottles are not panpipes). We waited... Two hours (it was almost full but having only one waiter was a bit of an amateur mistake). Finally, the food. 14 euros for a charred, rubberised piece of octopus, with a scattering of cold chips, one limp piece of lettuce and a slice of tomato. Then there was the lump of chicken on cold, plain spaghetti. Oh, and one meal simply didn't arrive. Let's put it this way, the waiter didn't place the food. He put it down and ran away. Not even in front of us. Just dumped and ran. He was utterly embarrassed. Needless to say, we didn't touch it. My husband told them we were leaving and wouldn't be paying for the food. They didn't even argue. But they still asked for the money for our drinks. Seriously? Our food was shocking. The worst I've had since the great lamb pate incident of 2010. Ideally this should get no stars. I'm not interested in excuses. If you can't offer a decent service with edible food, don't open. And I genuinely don't care about covid19 excuses. Our family are front line medics....
Read moreOn our very first night in Zakynthos we chose Taverna to Pelagaki for our first dinner... and then we went back 9 more times during our 13 days on the island! Dionysus and His family (they own and run the restaurant) made us feel like we're home from the first moment and after our last meal there we said goodbye to them with a heavy heart and a tear in our eyes.
We've tried most of the meals on the menu, all of them amazed us. Grandma is in charge in the kitchen and you can tell after the first bite that this is not some pre-cooked, warmed-up dish, but freshly made with decades of experience. Lot of the ingredients are from their own garden, but grandma also makes unbelievable baklavas and cakes, excellent mousaka, etc.
If you visit them, don't be in a rush, settle down, take in the view, the atmosphere of the place, enjoy the hospitality and the great food. You'll...
Read moreMe and my boyfriend visited this tavern three! times during our one-week vacation in Zakynthos. The place makes you feel as if you come home to your grandma and she cooks the best meals for you. Every time we received a big portion of grilled bread with different home-cooked toppings for free. The last time we came to try specifically moussaka because the day before the waiter told us that his mom was going to cook it on the next day at 12pm. Exactly at that time we were in the tavern and fresh moussaka was already prepared. We received a huge portion and enjoyed it so much! We also loved the zucchini balls (we tried them in three other places in Zakynthos and here they were the best) and fresh orange juice! We definitely recommend this place, which is also located right next to...
