Smokey Monkies BBQ — Restaurant in Budapest

This place is truly amazing. It is honestly the best BBQ joint in Budapest. While it probably wouldn't measure up to a BBQ joint in Texas or Missouri, it blows all the others in Hungary out of the water. I go here a couple times a week, because it is amazing (both lunch and dinner).

I think one of the things that makes it so great is that they are not a "stock" BBQ place offering the same stuff every time, which often leads to complacency. Every time you come here they will have different cuts and types of meat that were each individually chosen and carefully cooked.

They have 3 house sauces that are all pretty good, though they must be individually requested, which is my only real criticism since most BBQ joints in the states would have them in bottles at every table so folks could try a little of this and a little of that. Plus I think they could use one hot sauce, which they do sell a small individual one, but again, it should be standard and at the table...

The sides are ok, they usually have a slaw which can go on sandwiches (as it should), mustard potato salad, and a Mac and cheese. These are all fairly standard BBQ grinds, they do them well, but if you're here, it's really for the meat, not the sides!

But no matter what, this place is a must visit in Budapest if you like BBQ. There are a lot of places that claim to have good BBQ, most of them are not very good, this place lives up to...

We came in here after a bouldering session, tempted by the smells and the look of the place. We were met with an original interior and polite service. I ordered a coffee and something called a BBQ Marha Burger. Of course, my knowledge of Hungarian is very limited, but I was expecting some kind of classic burger with a fresh, juicy, minced beef patty. What I got in the end... The bun, vegetables, and sauce were okay, but the meat: it was strange pieces of beef of a weird color and taste. They were barely warm, you could even say semi-cold, so I immediately had doubts about their freshness. But because I was so hungry after my workout, I ate it and washed it down with the coffee, which was a 3 out of 5... The Smokey Monkeys is an incredible fast-food place where the food will make you smile all day long and feel amazing. I don’t like fast food, sandwiches, burgers, etc., and never eat them. However this place excited me :) The slow-cooked meat was suuuuper delicious. Both sandwiches we had - the pork one and the beef one, were top quality. Super tasty, a lot of meat, tasty sauces and the right amount of everything. And the prices were very moderate for what you receive in return.
