I’d give 4.5 for the experience all together. Perhaps 5 stars for the food & wine and only 4 for the service.
The restaurant is right at the historical centre, near the Danube. It seemed to me that mainly tourists (German and Slovak speaking) ate there, which felt a bit odd. The interior of the place is a bit tatty, probably 10 years ago it would have been considered elegant, but now.. not so much.
The food was fantastic though. They have a goose selection special menu right now, oddly enough you get 12% discount, if you book your table in advance - if you walk in, you pay the full price. You can mix the goose menu items with their regular menu.
Both of my starter and my main were super tasty, very polished and interesting mixtures of fresh and light flavours. I liked that they harmonised the classic dishes and added something refreshingly new to them - who would have thought that black pudding could be breaded and fried like Wiener schnitzel and taste lovely?
They have a reasonably good wine menu as well- they managed to pin down a good list of wines from really good Hungarian wine producers from Pannonhalma (local wines), around the Lake Balaton and even from Tokaj wine region - you can buy these per glass/dl. Other wines are only available per bottle.
I was super happy with my roast goose leg main course and the red wine I was recommended from Pannonhalma. It was divine.
I think the prices were okay, after all it’s a Michelin recommended restaurant. Probably a bit pricey for the regular Hungarian, hence tourist from nearby countries filled up the place.
The service was decent. I was bought the plates in a swift manner, however, in terms of hospitality they felt a bit short - they weren’t very much interested in me or wanted to give me a good dining experience, zero efforts were made. I think if they worked harder to provide excellent, caring and attentive hospitality, it could be a...
Read moreThe food is delicious and thoughtfully presented in the style of a gourmet restaurant, great wine selection and service is very friendly and likeable. The restaurant was our first dinner in Györ and I honestly don't think we'll be able to find another one that is as good during the rest of our stay.
The prices are reasonable for the high quality you get and I personally liked that the portions are just the right size compared to other restaurants we've been at. Not too small, but no food waste either.
Special recommendation for vegetarians! Some restaurants are described as "suited for vegetarians" because you can get fries or a green salad - yay, I know. La Mareda does have real options without fish and meat on their menu to chose from and they are really tasty. They even have vegan options, which is rare in thee area. And the desserts...
Read moreMe and my boyfriend took my family on this dinner as I no longer live in Europe but for a Michelin star restaurant I expected way better service. Food was amaizing and well presented, loved it but couldn’t get over why we had to wait 35-40 min for our entrees and 20+ minutes for desserts.
Our server was nice, friendly and the beginning was fine, but as it got busy, I constantly had to flag down someone! My boyfriend wanted to pay inside, so my family wouldn’t see the bill and they told him to sit down and he was very confused why he couldn’t pay inside.
I grew up in Hungary and been to this restaurant many times before but this was probably the last one. Spending as much as we spent, I expected a little better service, especially when they charge 10% service charge. Nevertheless, we left some extra tip, because it isn’t the...
