Kareng- the Ahom Kitchen, almost latently located in Beltola locality of Guwahati serves 'excelente' ethnic, non-vegetarian/ vegetarian Axomiya (Assamese) cuisine in their platter with a perfect blend of pan-Indian delicacies.
The resto has enough space both inside as well as outside (including car parks). Tables for 2s, 4s and even larger groups are neatly laid with a separate wing to host private parties too and the place is spotlessly clean.
Interior decor looks a bit drab though (probably because of recently shifting from its previous location from G.S. Road) but the wall painting of Ngi Ngao Kham- the mythical figure of the Tai Ahoms and the large colourful traditional Assamese 'Japi' at the center finely balances it. The climbers and plants hanging from bamboo planters and 'Kareng' engraved in Assamese at the entrance instantly welcomes the visitors and is a simple pleasure for the senses. Don't judge a resto by its decor and designs but by its food.
The 'Tilot Diya Gahori' (pork in sesame seeds) is highly recommended. Try the fish curry, it is truly mouth-smacking. So is their starter- crispy, chilly baby-corn, somewhat hot and pungent but finger-licking! Its kitchen also serves duck, pigeon, mutton, chicken (mainly local chicken). Foodies, don't miss this place!
If you prefer to eat your meals peacefully sans any unpleasant sounds of motorised vehicles and noise of crowds, then this is the right place to satiate your gastronomic delight. Go and enjoy your gourmet meals, as I dined with my spouse to celebrate my birthday.
The restaurant can hire more staff to cater to customers flocking to Kareng for a quick bite. It caters to online delivery as well (Swiggy, Zomato etc).

Read moreI recently visited Kareng The Ahom Kitchen to try out some authentic Assamese cuisine, and the presentation truly lived up to its reputation. The traditional brass utensils, the well-balanced thali with a variety of local preparations, and the ambience together created a culturally rich dining experience.
I ordered the Chicken with Sesame, but unfortunately, the waiter brought Pork with Sesame instead. I was quite tired that evening and didn’t want to create a scene, so I decided to stay quiet and go ahead with the meal.
Despite the mix-up, the food was flavorful. Each item in the thali had its own character from the tangy pickles and lightly spiced veggies to the smooth textures of chutneys and lentils. The pork, although not what I ordered, was tender and rich, blending beautifully with the sesame based gravy.
Service could definitely improve in terms of attentiveness and accuracy. For a place that prides itself on showcasing Assam’s culinary heritage, I hope such lapses are rare. Still, for those interested in exploring Assamese cuisine, Kareng remains a decent choice, just double...
