Karnataka Bhel House. That much-vaunted sanctum of street-side gastronomy, spoken of in reverential tones by Bengalureans with nostalgic appetites and sturdy digestive constitutions.
Nestled within the bustling by-lanes of Chamrajpet, this establishment enjoys an enviable reputation, its fame buttressed by breathless paeans and innumerable “must-try” lists.
Alas, one’s gustatory expectations, inflated by such chorus of acclaim, are swiftly deflated upon acquaintance with the fare itself.
The service, admittedly brisk, and the menu, commendably uncomplicated, inspire initial optimism. An optimism soon drowned in a deluge of crimson, chilli-infused water masquerading as masala puri. The once-crisp puris arrive limp, their soggy indignity compounded by an acrid tang that assaults rather than entices the palate.
If there is charm to be discerned here, it resides not in the culinary craftsmanship but in the economy of the enterprise. Proof, perhaps, that nostalgia and affordability can together obscure mediocrity.
To call this place an icon of Bengaluru’s chaat culture is not inaccurate, but one might fairly add: an icon more of sentiment than of substance.

Read moreKarnataka Bhel House is a popular establishment known for its street food offerings, particularly their bhel. However, it is worth mentioning that the bhel at Karnataka Bhel House is overrated and fails to live up to the hype. While it may not reach the desired levels of flavor and authenticity, there are other items on the menu that are worth a try.
One such item is the yum masala puri. Bursting with flavors, these deep-fried puris topped with a tantalizing mix of spices, chutneys, and crunchy sev offer a satisfying and enjoyable snack experience. The combination of textures and the harmonious blend of spices make the masala puri a standout dish at Karnataka Bhel House.
Another noteworthy mention is their softy ice cream. A refreshing treat, the softy ice cream at Karnataka Bhel House is a creamy and indulgent delight. Served in various flavors, it provides a perfect respite on a hot day or simply a sweet ending to your meal.
While Karnataka Bhel House may not live up to the expectations set by its bhel, the yum masala puri and the softy ice cream redeem the overall dining experience to some extent. It's worth considering these alternatives when visiting this...
Read moreWell you already know what they are good for, the best Masala Puri in Bengaluru. Great taste, unlike many other places in Bengaluru where you do get Masala Puri the Masala prepared here is a lot better, subtle in spice and thickness, the chaat levels are at the top. Puris are also crispy and the Shev rocks the dish nicely. Chopped Onions are absolutely essential in this dish and they enhance the taste and brings out the good from Masala Puri.
We also tried the Shev Puri, it’s good, they put sufficient Shev on the dish. They also top it with a red sweet chutney like which is good and tasty. Although I’ve had better Shev Puris but I won’t be complaining. They also put the Masala gravy on this one too, unlike Masala Puri the Puris here are not crushed.
Price of Masala Puri is around ₹60 and Shev is around ₹50.
Parking could be a challenge during day time, we visited later in the night around 9pm so we could get a...
