Ambiance Even the interiors are designed in a manner to give out a palatial feel, going hand in hand with the cuisine that they serve. The high ceilings only add to the palatial vibe of the restaurant. The tables and chairs are solid wood, and really, really beautiful. Although they do feel like antique furniture, I don’t quite think it is actual refurbished antique furniture – although, how I wished it were. The brick finish on the the interior walls also adds a brilliant touch to the ambiance. All the furniture placed near the walls also go a long way in adding a retro feel to the place. Even the photo frames on the walls, probably the family photos from the 70s or 80s, add a superb touch to the overall vibe of the restaurant. Most of the details, although missed by most people, go a long way in creating the kind of vibe and ambiance that this restaurant has. Service Madhavrao has held up to the level of service that could be expected from a fine dine restaurant – although it has a long way to go in terms of not being gender biased – well, doesn’t our society have a long way to go too? But other than the bit of a glitch, where our attendant asked just the sir as to how the food was, and didn’t care about the madam’s opinion, I think the service was excellent. The attendants and waiters were well versed with the menu, and had a fair idea of the ingredients of most of the dishes – a rare thing to be found in Ahmedabad. The Food and the Presentation Maintaining the palatial ambiance, even the plates and the cutlery that are used that are made out of brass – although a bit costlier side, it goes a long way in making the patrons feel special dining in palatial plates. Although, very uncommon these days, brass vessels used to be quite commonplace in most households until quite recently. But since the paradigm shift towards glass tableware, brass is certainly a welcome change. Kothambir Vadi This is hands down the best kothambir wadi I’ve tried until now – a proper mixture of Bengal gram, onions, and a lot of kothambir (corriander) deep fried until golden brown. And the way it was presented, served with mint chutney and imlee chutney, it was impossible not to drool over it. It tasted like an exquisite distant something related to the regular kothambir vadi. Misal Pav Although not the best misal pav I’ve had, it certainly is the best in Ahmedabad and also amongst the top misal pavs I’ve ever tried. It is a proper spicy misal containing bean sprouts as well as Poha ( the way it should) and is topped with finely chopped onion and savoury mixture – ah, the simple joys of life! Although the misal was extremely delectable, the pav served with the misal were quite disappointing, really dry and crumbly. Solkadi Even the solkadi was quite good, although I’d have loved it had it been more on the mangosteen side than on the coconut milk side – but I loved the fact that it was spicy and had a wholesome flavour of ginger. It was served in a glass tumbler, although it would’ve been great if they had served it in a brass glass, maintaining the overall tableware theme. Xitachi Bhakhri The xitachi Bhakhri was also extremely delicious. The xitachi Bhakhri is like the Goan version of the Maharashtrian bhajani thalipeeth – a flat bread made using a mixture of flours, with a prominence of rice flour and mixed with finely chopped onions and garlic. It was almost shallow fried until it is extremely crispy and was served with the traditional thecha and ghee! For those of you who don’t know, thecha is an extremely spicy chutney made using just chillies, garlic, and ginger.

Our family has been patronising MADHAVRAO for the past 7 years! The quality remains same. Not a bit of difference. What helps fill your needs is the first page of the menu - which is essentially the starters/snacks. You will rarely turn the menu page to look at the Combos. Mandatory & MUST TRY are the following: 1) Kothambir Vadi. Not oily but very tasty. The portion (six pieces) is good (rather very good) for 2 people. 2) Goan Xitachi. Again absolute worth the try. 3) Thalipeeth, the typical Maharastrian snack but with slight variation in the mix. 4) Palm Jaggery Ice Cream (Your visit to Madhavrao is incomplete without closing your menu with this). 5) Kokum Sharbat. Well made. Good to try: 1) Batata Puri - the potato curry is dry, Shrikand is home made but the Puris, sometimes, can be oily. 2) Vada Pav - One VP is good for lunch. Its huge (like a Maharaja Burger). 3) Misal Pav too is worth the try. But rarely will your taste buds allow you to try once you have eaten the Mandatory 5 items above! ONE TIP - Please do not order your entire choices at one go. The restaurant staff is not trained to think the 'fine-dining way.' They will just get and serve whatever is ready in whichever order. For example, in our latest visit 2 days ago, we were served Puri-Bhaji and Thalipith first in quick succession, then Kokum Sharbat and later Kothambir Vadi was served. The staff just don't think about it. Noise: The restaurant can be noisy some times what with large groups (typically what we see in Gujarat) troop in for a party. Then you are just a minority. LoL Otherwise, overall, it is a great place to dine. And once you dine for the first time, you are very very likely to go back to Madhavrao again and again....as we did in the last 7 years of our stay at Ahmedabad.

Only if you have excessive money to spend, you can try out this place. Or else, just learn from my experience. Jusy coz my husband was very keen on trying this restaurant we went there. Isse accha to mujhe shopping k liye paise de deta! We ordered for 1 sol kadhi, 1 kokam sarbat, 1 sugarcane juice, kanda bhajji, pav bhaji and dum misal. The drinks were okayish. Sol Kadhi - Rs. 105 Kokam Sarbat - Rs. 110 Sugarcane juice - Rs. 120 Kanda bhajji was good. - Rs. 160 Pav bhaji had a strong garlicy flavour which was quite overpowering and personally, I didn't like that. - Rs. 250 Dum misal had no DUM. (Could not click presentation pic) Leave dum, it was nowhere near a misal. It had black chana in it and the shev used was that of shev bhaji. Even the curry didn't have misal flavors. Dum misal was for Rs. 320 and it come without pav. You have to splurge an extra Rs. 45 for that pav jodi! The manager there got to know that we are Maharashtrians and wanted to know our feedback on the food. When I told him that the misal they are serving is nowhere near to a misal, he told me that earlier they used to serve the authentic one but Gujaratis didn't like it much so they altered it. They have really done a great job on the interiors and the decor part but I won't pay a bomb to watch that all. We have museums for that. Anyway, you can either learn from my expensive mistake or try spending your own money for the same.

We wanted to visit this place since such a long time and finally visited this place for Sunday lunch 2 weeks ago.

We had heard about their unlimited thali and wanted to try it but as it was Sunday, only ala carte was available. We were 6 friends who visited this place and paid 500 per person.

In terms of authenticity of the dishes, well we cannot comment but yes taste wise and how a particular dish is to be prepared, the dishes were indeed cooked accordingly as our friends who accompanied us shared their knowledge in terms of authenticity of the food.

Now coming to what we tried, in appetizers:

Batata vada- The vadas were very soft. We are not a “potato” person but this really tasted well. We loved having this soft and seasoned potato vada with the dry masala served with it.

Sev batata puri- Honestly, Rs. 140 for this dish seemed little overprice to us as being an amdavadi, we get really good sev puri on the streets in just Rs. 30. We thought maybe there will be some difference in this dish but it was just what we get on the streets or at local chaat shop.

Ragda patties- We liked the patties as they were soft and ragda with the chutneys and oinions over the top of patties tasted great as well.

Kothimbir Wadi- Made of coriander and besan, this maharashtrian dish tasted average to us. IT was not over the top oily which was great but having it alone did not impress us. We could have it easily with the chutneys served with it.

Couldn’t try much of Sugarcane juice and Sol kadhi (drinks) due to bad throat but both the drinks are refreshing.

For the main course we ordered: Rabodi ki sabji takkar, Malavi Matki Jowar Bhakri and Haldi Korma Methi Puri. We haven’t tried these dishes earlier so they tasted different. We somehow loved the Haldi Korma dish a lot due to the spiceness in the subji.

Masala Dosa- We love dosas but we didn’t find these appealing over here. The dosa batter was too thick and the dosa was not crispy.

Misal pav- We have tried this in Surat, Baroda and Mumbai and have loved this dish a lot. It’s a must have over here if someone is craving to have a good missal pav in Ahmedabad

Due to a bad throat, couldnt try Malpua Rabdi and Palm jaggery ice cream for desserts.

Tried Mohanthal which is an Indian sweet with ghee and dry fruits. It is a must try but for Rs. 160, the quantity is very less.

Overall a good place with lovely interiors. Service is really quick. We feel the dishes are overpriced or they should increase...

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Madhavrao Restaurant, and I must say it was an extraordinary experience. As a vegetarian, finding a restaurant that caters to my dietary preferences while delivering exceptional taste can be a challenge. However, Madhavrao exceeded all my expectations with its fantastic desi-style vegetarian cuisine.

From the moment I entered the restaurant, I was greeted warmly by the friendly staff. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, creating a comfortable atmosphere to enjoy a delightful meal. The traditional Indian decor added a touch of authenticity to the entire dining experience.

The menu at Madhavrao is extensive and offers a wide range of mouthwatering vegetarian dishes. Whether you're a fan of North Indian delights like paneer tikka and butter naan or crave the flavors of South Indian cuisine such as dosas and idlis, this restaurant has it all. Each dish is prepared with the utmost care, using fresh and high-quality ingredients, resulting in flavors that are rich, aromatic, and simply divine.

I had the pleasure of trying their signature dish, the Madhavrao Thali, and I was blown away by the variety and quality of the items served. The thali consisted of a delectable assortment of curries, dals, rice, bread, and mouthwatering desserts. It was a true feast for the senses, and every bite was a delight.

The service at Madhavrao deserves special praise. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and eager to assist with any questions or special requests. They ensured that every aspect of my dining experience was exceptional, from recommending dishes to promptly refilling my water glass.

Furthermore, the prices at Madhavrao are incredibly reasonable, considering the quality and quantity of food you receive. It's evident that the restaurant is committed to providing value for money without compromising on taste or service.

Overall, Madhavrao Restaurant is a hidden gem for vegetarian food enthusiasts. Whether you're a devoted vegetarian or simply looking to explore the world of vegetarian cuisine, this restaurant will undoubtedly leave you impressed. The combination of authentic flavors, welcoming ambiance, and exceptional service make it an unforgettable dining experience. I highly recommend Madhavrao Restaurant and cannot wait to visit again to indulge in their culinary delights.
