A Feast of Tradition: My Visit to The Malabar Coast by Appumm House
Located on the second floor of the IFC, M3M in Sector 66, Gurugram, The Malabar Coast by Appumm House offers a taste of authentic Indian coastal cuisine. But my recent visit wasn't just about the restaurant—it was about celebrating Onam, one of the most important festivals in Kerala. I had heard they were serving a traditional Onam Sadhya, and I knew I couldn't miss the experience.
The Onam Sadhya is a feast that brings families and friends together, served on a banana leaf just as it is in Kerala. This time-honored tradition felt both grand and intimate, and as soon as I saw the vibrant dishes laid out, I was transported to God's own country.
With over 27 varieties of Onam specials on the menu, every bite was a new discovery. The flavors were bold, layered, and comforting all at once. I started with the Thakkali Rasam, a spiced tomato soup that immediately awakened my senses. Then came the Beetroot Pachadi, a tempered curd with beetroot that was both creamy and tangy.
As I made my way through the dishes, there were so many standouts. The Sambharam, a light and refreshing buttermilk, was perfect between bites, and the Amaraka Thoran—a dry cluster beans preparation—added just the right amount of crunch. There were also banana chips, of course, both the Vazhakka Chips (salted) and the sweet, jaggery-coated Sarkara Varatty.
A few of my personal favorites were the Olan, a delicate white lobia and ash gourd curry, and the hearty Kalan, a rich raw banana and yam curry. And then, the Parippu Curry, a simple yet flavorful lentil dish, paired beautifully with both the Kuthari Choru (Kerala red boiled rice) and the steamed white rice.
Pickles, of course, were abundant: from the tangy Manga Achar (mango pickle) to the zesty Naringa Achar (lemon pickle) and even a gooseberry variation. Each one added a burst of intense flavor to the meal.
By the time dessert arrived, I was blissfully full but couldn't resist the offerings. The Ada Pradhaman, a jaggery-sweetened rice cake dessert, and the Semiya Payasam, a vermicelli-based milk dessert, were the perfect sweet notes to end the feast.
This Onam Sadhya at The Malabar Coast wasn't just a meal—it was an experience steeped in tradition and culture. If you're in Gurugram and looking for a taste of coastal India, especially during festival season, this is one place you...

Well.. my profile takes me out for traveling frequently to different cities specially south of India and being a foodie am always exploring the local cuisine. One such place I love going for good food is Valarmati in coimbatore.. I always miss that kind of food in Delhi NCR.
When I entered the restaurant.. the interiors and the colors used are quite welcoming and extended positive vibes.. Yes, I am a vegetarian.. We were welcomed with the glass of Kokum Soda (ofcourse sweet base) & Kokum kadhi (salty base) and rice flour pappadams with variety of interesting chutneys which were refilled as and when requested. We decided to order Coorg Mushroom pepper fry as mentioned (must try) in the menu yes.. truly its a must try.. and then the Paneer Ghee roast .. honestly as per my taste buds, it could have been better.. And in the main course we decided for Patato Badage Gassi ( baby potato and sprouts cooked in Mangaluru Style) and Pineapple Yellow Curry (sweet & sour South Indian Style Creamy and Mild pineapple curry) . Both dishes stood out individually in the taste. We relished each bite with soft and crispy Malabar parotta. Am a fan of Appam.. plain and beetroot Appam both were really good. It was just perfect yet we topped it up with more ghee and gun powder and enjoyed eating it just like that.. Trust me am gonna go again for this food .. even if am a vegetarian there's loads of variety in their menu, yet to give it a try. You need to check out their tempting varieties of Appams and other dishes as well. And specially for my non vegetarian friends it's a delight. I could judge it from the feedback of my fellow foodie friends.. Am sharing the pics of the food they relished as well.. I hope each picture does justice to the taste and presention of the delicious food.
To sum up.. the dessert.. Payasam.. served in the steel glass placed in the replica of custom made green coconut. And for sure am gonna go again to cover it up with another set of family & friends..
Indeed an Absolutely Joyful experience..
P.s. (don't follow the Google location, it takes you behind the building on the kacha road.. The restaurant on the 2nd floor is visible & the entry to the building is very much from the main road right opposite...
Read moreI went with my family and 3 year old son on Onam day for the Sadya. The service and their management plan to welcome so many guests were terrible! I didn’t find any Malayali team member to understand the essence of the emotion Keralites will carry on this festival day! We were willing to wait provided someone would come every now and then and update us about our position or make sure the guests waiting are comfortable! All they were bothered were to serve whoever stepped inside to eat. There were around 50-60 people at a time waiting for the Sadya. On Onam day it’s not just the food that’s a part. We might have other plans lined up. So why entertain a pre booking and then make us wait for 3 hours! They could have easily done prebooking with appointments in batches. Everyone could have been served in batches the same time and asked to leave as a lot after 20min so that next batch can get in. The kid was wailing after a 3 hour wait and they weren’t even aware it happened just outside their door, forget coming out and showing some courtesy! They said pre-booking didn’t matter but at the same time they were writing down the name and number of customers who came at front desk and were ringing them up for their turn! (So those who are regular to this place on Onam had their day planned accordingly by just adding their name and number and roaming around in the vicinity..but what about new customers who had no idea how long was wait and just pre booked for food and had other plans later?!) Multiple times I had to go in to get some food to snack for the child because I wasn’t expecting this and didn’t carry any. Nobody cared about the people waiting out..didn’t even offer water. Eventually after a 3 hour wait we left the place without Sadya because by baby was getting hungry, tired and impatient. We had a sumptuous meal elsewhere thereafter, which was the best decision! So I recommend nobody to turn up there on Onam day without confirming exact wait time and the arrangements made...
